Strong rumours link Chiwetel Ejiofor to Star Wars role

Oscar frontrunner Chiwetel Ejiofor might just have landed a role in JJ Abrams' new Star Wars film...

There's some serious Oscar buzz building up already for Chiwetel Ejiofor, off the back of his lead performance in director Steve McQueen's new film, 12 Years A Slave. Ejiofor, also seen in the likes of American Gangster, Chidren Of Men and Kinky Boots, plays Solomon Northup in the new film, a man who's kidnapped and sold into slavery. Reviews for his work have been nothing short of sensational.

Now, a new story over the weekend popped up in The Times Magazine, which suggests that he might be in line for a major blockbuster movie role. Specifically, a role in Star Wars: Episode VII.

The article in question talks about an interview with JJ Abrams, and the specific line that's raised speculation levels is "the British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, front-runner in this year’s Oscar race, is sitting in the lobby of JJ Abrams’ office. If you’re a sci-fi fan, this might be very big news indeed".

In the main article itself, Abrams is asked whether Ejiofor has indeed won a Star Wars role, and the fairly predictable response of "I can't discuss casting" is given. Abrams does add that "he's a very talented gentleman".

Other sources are suggesting that he has indeed been cast in the film, though.

We maintain that a Star Wars: Episode VII announcement, with the key cast confirmed, can't be too far away now. It's all but clear that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are returning, and rumours continue - despite denials - to link Benedict Cumberbatch to the project. But as for Chiwetel Ejiofor? It seems quite likely, but we await confirmation...

Even if Peter Mayhew is too ill to return at least there will still be a 'Chewie'.

Well that's one of the cast of serenity at least then.

I thought he was so wooden in serenity. Hope this isn't true, don't want him ruining SW too!

Nice casting, but if I hear he's playing "Son of Lando", I will not be happy

I didnt know Mace Windu had a son!

Like that guy in everything I have seen him in - excellent actor!

He would be great. He's never less than great in everything he's in.

He was p-e-r-f-e-c-t in Serenity. Superb casting in that film and I (hopefully) look forward to that gravitas that he'll bring to SW7.

I do know that they have been asking some of the English actors auditioning to use an American accent.

Having only just re-watched 'Serenity' I have to agree; he is a superb actor.

I found the commentary by Whedon illuminating, especially regarding the writing process and The Operative's character. If you haven't seen it, I think you should; it could change your mind about Ejiofor's performance.

Do you remember any particular comments or scenes to re-watch? Not sure I want to watch the whole film with commentary so soon after rewatching the film.

From what I recall (it's been a while), it's early on - up to the point and including where the Operative skewers the dude with the sword.

I believe he (Whedon) discusses how he was struggling with the character of the Operative, but finally solved it when he wrote the Operative's lines as the guy lies dying with the sword through him.

It resonated with me, and I hope it works the same for you.

Brilliant in Serenity, conveyed a complex character who had given up his soul to realize his ideals.

I would not be surprised if Ejiofor played a Jedi or some similar type of character, because he is really good at projecting an otherworldly aura in his performances.
