Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg working on Star Wars spin-offs?

Did you know Darth Vader had a brother? Nor did George Lucas...

Expect Star Wars spin-offs as well as sequels on the big screen, it seems. Plus, Mark Hamill gives a quick update on his involvement.

It was only a week or so ago that news broke about the involvement of writers Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg in the new trilogy of Star Wars movies. We already know that Michael Arndt is writing Star Wars Episode VII, and the assumption was that Kasdan and Kinberg were thus taking on Episode VIII and Episode IX. As it turns out, that may not be the case.

Instead, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the screenplays Kasdan and Kinberg are working on are potentially spin-off movies, and not necessarily part of an unfolding new trilogy. This ties into the approach that Marvel takes with its movies, of course, where individual films put individual characters at the centre of them. Disney has ambitious plans to bring a new Star Wars film to the big screen every other year, and a series of direct sequels is not necessarily the way it is taking things.

Also in Star Wars news, Mark Hamill has given a new interview where he's revealed that he's still unsure whether he'll be reprising the role of Luke Skywalker in Episode VII. "Until I know more about what they have in mind, I think it's better to let Lucasfilm make the announcements", he told E! Online.

Star Wars Episode VII is set for release in 2015.

Spin-offs eh? Go on, give us Knights of the Old Republic!

That game still ranks up there as one of the best I've ever played, and it looks and feels like Star Wars, so theoretically a game to film translation shouldn't be too difficult. It's still very popular and well known, so it's not as though it'd be a gamble to do it.

Get ready for Star Wars overload. Unless everything is done really well we could all be very sick of Star Wars by 2017

In a completely gut reaction way, that sounds like a dreadful idea. I have a creeping dread that the law of diminishing returns will apply and we'll end up with stale, washed out TV movie-style Star Wars lite dramas a bit like Star Trek.

After the initial news that they were doing spin-offs which then became a new trilogy I'm glad that we're back to spin-offs again.

The beauty of the Star Wars universe is that it is so rich that it doesn't have to depend on the Skywalker narrative to be in the foreground all the time and can instead just provide the background against which other stories play out.

Good news for me!

They're doing a new trilogy AND spin-offs.

For me, the Starwars film I would like to see would based on the book "Death Troopers", Yeah it's set 5 years pre ANH and does contain Han solo, so Harrison Ford being alot older now would be a problem, but it was such a good read and would be worth the effort.

Disney has already proven that they can handle this style of over-arching movie mythology, so Star Wars seems the perfect evolution now that they have perfected the practice. Since Lucas already hit rock bottom with the dreadful prequels I don't see how this new approach could be worst. I'm stoked!

Agreed! I don't know why they would want to tie back into the already established (and played out) mythology when they could literally tell any story. Look at the Alien franchise, they couldn't let go of the Ripley mythology which led to Resurrection (which ironically killed the franchise).

I am more excited for this new trilogy / spin off movies than I was over Episode 1, and there is almost no way that Matthew Vaughn could make a worse movie than that, so I'm stoked to see a decent Star Wars movie again.

Suddenly we have a very real possibility of seeing some amazing stories on screen set in our universe, when once there was no hope. Whats not to be excited about?

....You wait years for a Star Wars movie, then 5 come along at once!

Heheheh wouldnt it be amazing and really funny and a kick in the Jar Jars for Luca$ if the new films were really REALLY good? Good story, great acting and effects and were BETTER than any of his. Better than Empire...dare I say it? Its not very likely I agree, but you never know. If the first new film from the Mouse Hole blows the Phreaking Monstaid out of the water then I am going to laugh until I get a stitch. Then I am going to laugh some more. Then I am going to get drunk and laugh, then I am going to pass out, then I am going to wake up laughing in the morning with a hang over. Not that I will be laughing about it....even a little bit.....

Yeah, that's what I read too. I'm pumped for the spin-offs more than the new trilogy though. I want to see a Boba Fett movie!

If the movies are done well - you know, good movies that just happen to be set in the Star Wars universe - then I don't see why we'd be sick of them.

A found footage movie told through the stormtroopers' shoulder mounted cams, a la Rec 2...? We get to watch them firing their weapons, missing targets again and again...

I want a full-length Stormtroopers movie similar to the "Cops" spoof done on YouTube a few years back. It would be a comedy of course. Not sure if that would fly...

wouldnt it be great if they make a " Bounty Hunters Wars" Trilogy??

The X-wing squadron books moving into the Wraith Squadron stories.

Hopefully something other than the usual thin Disney gruel will occasionally be served up if only be accident.

Great, more spin-offs like the Holiday Special, Caravan of Courage & Battle For Endor to look forward to. . .

Better than Empire :| ?

Has to be a Darth Vader spin off, maybe he goes hunting Obi-wan, chases him around the galaxy, they have a duel, Darth thinks he kills Obi-wa, Obi-wan hides out on Tatooine till ANH
