Benedict Cumberbatch on Star Trek Into Darkness

News Simon Brew 5 Dec 2012 - 06:53

Benedict Cumberbatch talks about his character in JJ Abrams' Star Trek sequel. Plus, news on trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness.

The publicity engine for JJ Abrams' Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, was fired up earlier this week with the release of the teaser poster for the movie. This Thursday, a teaser trailer is being released online. Then, next week the first nine minutes of the film are being attached to certain IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. We understand that a further, longer trailer will follow that.

This Thursday's is hardly a trailer for a trailer then, thank goodness. Ten second previews of movie trailers are not a trend we want to encourage.

Elsewhere on the publicity trail, though, the preview of the film was screened at an embargoed press event in Japan, which also featured a Q&A. TrekMovie has picked up a translation of what Benedict Cumberbatch had to say at the event, where he gave a few clues as to his character.

"I was a fan of the [first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie], so I was pleased when I got the offer. But I know the second one will become far-bigger scale, so I felt terror instantly", he admitted.

Turning to his character, he revealed that "he is very ruthless…he is not a clearly good or evil character. He is a villain but the actions he takes has intent and reason. He is a complicated character not to be judged by white-or-black, or good-or-evil. But this is the appeal of JJ’s works and I felt challenge as an actor".

We look forward to finding out a little more, quite possibly by the end of the week...

Black leather, ruthless, not clearly good or evil? Is he Section 31?

Now THAT would be interesting. I doubt they'll be quite that creative, but I'm looking forward to this all the same.

Sounds like Anorax from Voyager!

It's SYBOCK people

Mirror Universe Nog.
You heard it here first.

Why not make him Nimoy-Spock's son?

On top of all the cool familial drama mileage, we'd get some cool interplay between Quinto Spock and his Parallel-future self offspring... That would be cosmic.

Wait, wait... there's a Star Trek villain called 'Anorax'?

What, really?

Sybok with human ears... plausible but you're forgetting that the villain had come from within Starfleet.

Yup, he was the antagonist in Year of Hell parts 1 & 2. Timey wimey wibbly wobbly stuff.

Did he wear several anoraks?
