John Cho on Star Trek Into Darkness

We now know what JJ Abrams' Star Trek sequel is going to be called. And John Cho has been chatting about Star Trek Into Darkness...

The confirmation of a title for JJ Abrams' Star Trek sequel, now known as Star Trek Into Darkness, suggests that Paramount might be about to kickstart the publicity campaign for the secretive film. It's pretty much a given, after all, that we'll be getting a maiden trailer this side of Christmas, but we wonder if it might be weeks, rather than months away.

While we speculate on that, actor John Cho, who plays Sulu in the film, has been chatting to IGN. He's not giving too much away, although he does say "I think the second one may be magnificent, baby. You can quote me on that. I think it may be amazing".

Furthermore, he adds that "I think this movie is different from the first one in that we can get started on the story right away. It feels to me - having read it and having done it - like a more expansive story because we can devote more screen time to it [as opposed to setting up the origins]".

Cho also revealed that new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve "blended in right away", and seems, as you'd expect, very upbeat about the movie as a whole.

Still need a final cast/character list. PLEEEASE no Khan.

To be a decent Trek movie at this present day, the script should NOT feature a big infernal machine, a rebellious Klingon/Romulan/Vulcan/Starfleet maniac, any return of a former villain, a potential new religion, any expanded plot from a TV episode, or any dead character being brought back to life. There is one highly attractive exception to these rules which would work extremely well indeed - another encounter with the Guardian of Forever and a sequel (NOT a movie remake) of "The City on the Edge of Forever". If it was well-scripted and visualised, this could be a great movie. I will not hold my breath.

"The City on the Edge of Forever" is still one of my favorite episodes from any ST series. Well written, well acted.
