Sony planning live action & CG Sonic The Hedgehog movie

Sonic The Hedgehog is getting a full feature film, mixing animation and live action. Yep.

Sony's already got a couple of videogame movies in the works, what with another Resident Evil film and its animated take on Angry Birds both lined up. And now it's added another: it's going to be bringing Sonic The Hedgehog to the big screen.

Oddly, this one's going to be a mix of live action and computer animation, with Even Susser and Van Robichaux penning a screenplay for the film. The Sonic The Hedgehog movie will also feature key characters from the game franchise.

Sony is working with the Japanese-based Marza Animation Planet on the movie, with Marza being part of the Sega Sammy group. Neal Moritz is overseeing the project.

No release date has been revealed yet, but this is bound to be a good three years away yet.

Had a Sonic cartoon on VHS which I loved as a kid, so feel strangely up for this...

Hummm.... much as I love Sonic, not sure how I feel about this one

"strangely up" meaning...

I'm sorry, but I don't know when I'll grow out of those jokes. Somewhere in my eighties I'd think.

I'm sure it'll be fun, might be similar to sonic X where they accidently get transported to our world.

What about an epic eleven-part series, each installment of which is set in a beautifully CGI'd version of the different stages of Sonic 2, from Emerald Hill all the way up to the Death Egg? With re-worked versions of the music from each stage by various exciting music producers and bands du jour? Something seriously sweeping and insane, like Sonic does the Dark Tower series? And it all gets crazy meta somewhere around Casino Night, and Sonic accidentally falls into Super Mario 3 for a bit? Also he has to team up with Crash Bandicoot at one point? And at the climax of Death Egg, Dr. Robotnik (NOT EGGMAN) leaps from his exploding giant robot version of himself and tears off his face to reveal that he's been Tim from Braid the whole time? And he's been driven insane by the ending of Braid? And then loads of crazy time travel sh*t occurs? And Sonic has to rescue the kid from Limbo? Except he's in another castle? And then there's also Super Meat Boy? Etc?

Or they could just film some cheap-looking bilge in which Sonic and his friends accidentally get transported to our world and have to help a slumming-it Brendan Fraser reunite with his estranged family.

Did it have the episode where Tail gets reunited with his family except they're actually imposters?

That doesn't immediately ring any bells, I'm gonna have to try and find it now!

Do you still have the capability to play VHS? I thought that technology had been lost to the mists of time...

Whats the odds like on this being another story of how the core character group are somehow transported to modern day america and need help from the comedic relief human character to get back and save their own world!!

Haha may have to try and find an old TV and VHS player too...

There will be a forced in human protagonist in this movie, I'm almost sure!

Dude there's some company that put em on DVD, along with (though on separate DVDs) denver the last dinosaur, super Mario bros super show (minus captain Lou albano and friends, sadly) and a few other old school cartoons. I've rented and bought a few for my kids

*crosses fingers* Kintobor origin. Kintobor origin. Kintobor origin. *crosses fingers*

Should be interesting. It can't be any worse then that Super Mario Bros movie.

My God, have Kintobor be the hero of the movie, he's a scientist that ends up trapped on Mobius, befriends Sonic and then it all goes horribly wrong.

They'll probably do the crap they did with smurfs and bring it into the "real" world. My prediction is that it will suck.

I am fairly confident that this will be "totally radical" in a purely sarcastic way.

Wait, there's going to be an Angry Birds movie too? I think the only way my brain would accept an Angry Birds movie is if I watch it whilst sat on the toilet.
