Snowpiercer's director on the forced US cut of the film
Bong Joon-ho has been chatting about the shorter version of Snowpiercer that The Weinstein Company has ordered...
We've been chatting about the terrific-looking Snowpiercer at Den Of Geek for the past year now, and so were happy to add our names to the list of those dismayed when it was revealed that The Weinstein Company was re-editing the film for American audiences. The given justification was to ensure that the post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller- which has earned rave reviews and sizeable box office numbers in Korea - would be "understood by audiences in Iowa".
Notwithstanding the fact that it's a shoddy remark to make about a state where Kevin Costner built his baseball field, the idea of simplifying and shortening the film - which is the plan - is a troubling one. In different parts of the word, are books published that have shorter, less confusing words in them to those versions in other territories? Thought not.
However, in this instance, Harvey Weinstein appears to have an unlikely figure of limited support at least, in the shape of Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho. He's overseeing the new cut of the film, and told Xin MSN that "I came here after editing for the American version. I’ve never produced a new version for overseas premieres, and this is the first time I’m making a new version".
He added that "Weinstein is actually being pretty soft toward editing, probably because it’s noticed how critics have praised the film and know how angry movie fans get over new edits. They even asked me which parts I want to include in the film".
It's hardly Bong Joon-ho defending the process, and sounds more like damage limitation. But on the upside, the strength of feeling about the potential dumbing down of the movie has at least resonated somewhere along the line.
The likelihood remains that we'll get the uncut version of Snowpiercer in the UK, although that may yet be wishful thinking on our part. We'll keep you posted...
