DreamWorks Animation boss hints at Shrek 5

Shrek The Worst.

DreamWorks Animation is planning a new Shrek outing, it seems...

Rarely has a franchise fallen from creative, inspired genius to production line fodder in the manner of Shrek. Across three decreasingly impressive sequels, and a Puss In Boots spin-off, DreamWorks Animation didn't quite kill the golden goose, but it certainly plucked a few too many feathers than were healthy for it. The films weren't terrible by the end, but they were a far way from special.

Last we heard, there were still plans for a sequel to Puss In Boots, although things have been quiet there for a while. But now, DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg has suggested that another big screen outing for Shrek is in the locker.

Talking to the Fox Business Network, he said that "we like to let them have a little bit of time to rest, but I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We're not finished, and more importantly, neither is he".

Whether that's an outright Shrek 5 remains to be seen. But with DreamWorks partnering on a new Far Far Away Adventure attraction in the UK that's set to star Shrek and open next year, it looks like the firm's biggest franchise to date is set to return.

Coming Soon.

So they lied that Shrek 4 WAS the END. Sigh. Shrek is love, Shrek is life. It's never ogre.

Title of fourth film...
Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter.

Hmmm.

"Across three decreasingly impressive sequels"

Shrek 2 is easily the best film of the series for me, though that's just my opinion.

After the "meh" third movie the fourth made up for that together with 'Puss in Boots', but a fifth one would really be puching it.

They need to make up for the travesty that was the fourth film. Love the first three and Puss in Boots, but 4 was awful. Bring it on!

Perhaps they'll go for a prequel. These Hollywood types know all the tricks!

Agreed Shrek 2 was head and shoulders above what followed it and I did enjoy it even more than the first one.

Or a reboot!

You watched the entire series correct? All of them were of equal quality.

I personally don't rate Shrek 2 as much as the first - it just felt like it was trying too hard in places. That certainly doesn't make it a bad film; I'd happily argue that the Fairy Godmother was probably the best villain of the series and some of the early scenes with Shrek and his in-laws are wonderful. I just don't think it reaches the heights of Shrek 1's wrestling/Robin Hood/Fiona singing bits.
