Shailene Woodley on being cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Shailene Woodley chats about learning she's been cut out of director Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2...

It might be fair to say that Shailene Woodley has had the last laugh here. Originally cast to play Mary Jane in this summer's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, she was eventually cut from the film, with the strong suggestion that the role would be recast for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

With the world now having seen The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it's hard to see where the character of MJ could have fitted in, given that there was so much going on already. That notwithstanding though, Woodley has now headlined two films that have topped the box office this year. Divergent hit earlier in the year, and did good business. And she's one of the two leads in The Fault In My Stars, which is the surprise hit of the summer in the US.

Chatting to Vanity Fair however, Woodley has been discussing when she got the news that her MJ wasn't going to make the cut in Spider-Man. “For a few hours it was literally like, ‘Oh, my God, was I awful? Why did they cut me? What are people going to think?’", she admitted. But then she said that "I woke up the next morning and I was like, ‘OK, it makes total sense.’ I’m a pretty spiritual person, so I can just sit back and trust that everything happens for a reason, even if my ego doesn’t like it".

Woodley's commitments to the rest of the Divergent movie saga are likely to keep her from Spider-Man. But that's not been 100% confirmed yet.

Would have been glad of it!

She's fine and all, but there are plenty of attractive young women who could do a good MJ. She needs a slightly rounder, or more strawberry-shaped face, too.

strawbery face. new villain

She dodged a bullet.

They should get Emma Stone to play MJ. She was born for the role. Oh wait...

In an overstuffed movie, where the best moment was a "tragic event" later on, the last thing the film needed was another love interest to diminish the effectiveness of the said event.

Have Emma Stone come back, but with a red wig.

Based on the pictures that leaked online of her as MJ she looked OLD! The hair wasn't even the right shade and she just looked odd. They should widen their search and look for another actress. There was NO room for MJ in this film, Gwen and Peter was central and then when Gwen died I did too lol.

I'm glad. Never saw her as MJ anyways.

I agree. She did NOT look at part of MJ.

to be honest she dodged a bullet there.

"...could have fitted in." Oy.

I can picture Karen Gillian as a good Mary Jane.

I second this! I would even third this!

yes!i hope that she won't be mary jane, she is not suited to be mary jane. lucky they cut her out from amazing spiderman 2. oh my god! i'm so happy!really hope that she 100% not taking the role of mary jane. maybe they could still use emma stone but dye her hair red, she will fabulous and definitely suitable for that role.

OMG 'Old'. This must have meant her performance would have been just awful. Why even consider 'acting' ability at all? I suspect given the massive turd this franchise has stepped in she'll be thanking her lucky stars.

I can picture Karen Gillan. Full Stop.

***The Fault in OUR Stars!!***

That bint from Doctor Who?
Hell no
Nice girl... but no Mary Jane

To be fair Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield look hilariously old. I had teachers younger than them when I was at school. You can't just put a back pack on someone and think it makes them look like a teenager. I know the problem isn't unique to Spider Man but it still cracks me up to see actors who are almost thirty pretending to try to get to class on time and have "teenage" problems.

Moan, moan bloody moan. I don't care who plays MJ, but i do care about the Spiderman story, because like you I watched the telly in the 90s and read the comics previous to that. Shailene Woodley, she's just a face on the screen and a younger face than Emma Stone.
I imagine most of you people that are complaining, would have, given the opportunity moaned about Kirsten Dunst playing Mary Jane, just like Daniel Craig wasn't going to be a good Bond, or like any film where the actor didn't meet your expectations till proven otherwise.
SPOILER ALERT: This film will not turn your crush on a FICTIONAL character into a real life love story. 'Her hair isn't the right shade & she looked odd'? Are you being serious?! Being an internet troll, just because you don't think you can rub one out to a certain actress... I bet you make all the important decisions at home*

*Your mums home**

**Where you still live, at 35***

*** because you are a virgin.

This article is about how she responded to being cut from a film that was full already, not your an open forum on her face, hair or your perverted teenage crush.

Shailene Woodley is one crazy some of her interviews if you dont believe me

Or just her natural hair colour. She's not blonde

She is a red head

TASM2 was hardly my favourite movie of the year and i haven't seen either of Woodley's box office smashes. But her as MJ never bothered me, I can see where others are coming from in criticizing the casting but for me it was "eh, okay." Glad she's doing well though, I'm sure many actors would not have taken it so well.

I can picture Karen Gillian as a good Mary Jane.
