Vin Diesel confirms plans afoot for new Riddick sequel

Riddick 4 is on the way, it seems, as Vin Diesel reveals Universal wants to develop another film in the series,

Whether you liked or disliked the big screen revival of Riddick, that's just arriving on DVD and Blu-ray now, one thing that's clear is that it's been a successful resurrection of the franchise. Overcoming reviews that veered more towards negative than positive, the film did decent business at the box office (banking nearly $100m against a modest budget), and is now proving to be a success on its disc release. So much so that Vin Diesel has revealed a new Riddick movie looks like it's heading into development.

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Diesel said that "Universal just called me and told me Riddick is number one on the DVD charts. There's no way Riddick would have been made without you guys. You know that. and you guys have been a part of our page since 2012 and remember how arduous a road it was to get the movie made, and to make it rated R, and to do it with such a low budget. It's a win for all of us and I really, really thank you so much". He then added the pivotal words "Universal also says they want to develop the next one".

Riddick 4 it is, then. When we can expect it is unclear at the minute, but as we hear more, we'll let you know...

58% on Rotten Tomatoes is "veer[ing] more towards negative than positive"? It's only 2% off a Fresh rating.

It was ok. I graded Riddick 3 at about B-/C+.A 4 might be pushing your luck..Good luck with that.

I enjoyed Riddick 3 a little less than its two predecessors, but I'm glad they're doing another one. It's an entertaining low-budget action sci-fi franchise. And they sort of left Riddick 3 on a cliffhanger and I want to know what happens next.

I thought Riddick 3 was pretty solid, with one glaring exception. Katee Sackoff's character was possibly the worst written character in the history of cinema. Every time she was on screen, the whole thing seemed a bit amateurish.

Aside from that though, I thought it was enjoyable, and wouldn't mind another sequel

I really enjoyed it, its definitely a step in the right direction after the second and it had some real balls with regards to its opening and second acts.
Having the first with mostly just Diesel's space felon on screen and then turning him into a barely seen bogeyman terrorising mercs made the character feel more like the Riddick from Escape From Butcher Bay than anything else in the franchise which is excellent.
Can't wait for the next one :D

agreed 3 was good and I look forward to 4 some adult scifi fun is always appreciated

Loved Riddick and agree Sackoff was the weakest link but still a great film. Nice to see Universal 'crawling back on hands and knees'. Well done Vin.

Always thought the second got a raw deal, I liked it a lot and loved the scale they were going for, the closest I've seen to a Warhammer 40k movie... The third was okay, been a fan of Kattee Sackoff since starbuck but felt she was a bit weak and underused. This is great news, I'd like to see them explore the Necromongers more, budget permitting...

I loved the first one, enjoyed he second (especially the scale) and was indifferent to the third. As with all good heroes/anti-heroes they live and die by the srength of the villain(s). Riddick just needs someone badass to out-badass! I didn't mind Katee Sackoff in the 3rd instalment but I think she was given a raw deal with the character.

Agreed - I love Riddick, but Katee Sackoff's character was a mess. Looking forward to the sequel.

Good news. I do like this franchise. However I dislike the stupid titles given to the movies in the series. Why not Pitch Black 2, 3 and 4? Why the lurch from 'Pitch Black' to 'Chronicles' (note the 's', as in plural), to 'Riddick'? Ah well. What's in a name. I love the movies and the character.

Well, actually the whole series is called 'The Chronicles of Riddick', much like 'A New Hope' was originally called 'Star Wars' but would become the overarching title of the franchise. (Not that I'm saying that the original trilogy and Riddick are on the same level.) What the alternate title for 'Chronicles' would be, I don't know.

Loved Pitch Black, Second one was ok but the third one was terrible. Awful dialogue, some seriously dodgy acting and some really ropey effects. The even killed the dog-thing. First 30 mins were good but I thought the film dipped badly when the mercs turned up.

LOL, I love all three of them (for different reasons) and I couldn't be more happier!

I've only seen Pitch Black and Riddick (Chronicles bad reputation put me off quite a bit), but despite Riddick being a tight science fiction surrival thriller, I don't plan on seeing any future installments due to the rather stupid development in the plot point in which Riddick cures Kattee Sackcroff's character of her 'lesbianism' (to put it in terms the film might understand)

Very disappointed in all parties involved with the movie for that development.
