Poltergeist remake finds its director

News Simon Brew 7 Mar 2013 - 06:34

You might not want a Poltergeist remake. But getting the director of Monster House to do it is a good move...

One of the most sorely underappreciated animated movies of recent times is the terrific Monster House. It never did particularly great business, but it's bursting with ideas, and very much deserves not to be forgotten about. The less you know about it, the better, but just know that Community creator Dan Harmon worked on the screenplay.

Furthermore, the film was directed by Gil Kenan, who's since gone on to do City Of Ember. And he's just gone and landed himself a new job.

Kenan is the surprise, but very welcome choice, to direct the planned remake of Poltergeist, that's been bubbling away for some time in development. There's no real reason in the world why we want a remake of Poltergeist, to be fair, but if it's deemed necessary to have one, than at least Kenan is a different choice.

Sam Raimi is amongst the producers of the new movie, and presumably MGM is going to look to get it into production later this year. More news on Poltergeist as we get it. Do check out Monster House if you haven't already, though.

F{u}ck remakes.

My kids absolutely love Monster House!!

Poltergeist is without doubt the scariest movie i have ever seen. Obviously now it isnt but it was the movie that had the biggest effect on me when i watched it around 8 / 9 yrs old. It actuallyt turned me into a coulrophobe :( There are other titles out there that warrant a remake more than this movie. I wish they would just leave well enough alone.

Oh dear God no...is nothing sacred!

Whats good about this remake is, it will make everyone realise just how good the original is and why it is so scary.

I can imagine this new one (do we really need more haunted house films currently!? Paranormal Activity... Sinister... Mama etc) will just use quiet...then loud noise shock tactics as per usual. Not actually scary, just jumpy.

John Carpenter's The Thing was a remake. As was Scarface with Al Pachino.

I thought Poltergeist already got a remake (err, rip-off), it's called 'Insidious'

I liked Monster House it was pretty good. But this needs to be left alone. Its not needed. The original is perfect. An out and out classic. There is nothing a remake could bring to this thats better than the original.

All that will happen is the effects will improve, but the characters, acting and plot and script will get worse.

There you go, I just remade it.

You would think after the modern remake of Psycho they would have learned their lesson.

Monster House is brilliant.

Fistfull of Dollars. Although I sympathise with David Prentice, been a while since we saw a really good one.

The crop of modern recent remakes does not make for stellar viewing, but that does not mean all remakes are bad.

The Magnificent Seven?

The chemistry between the actors really made the original work so perfectly. No-one could replace them as the Freeling family.
