Guillermo del Toro on what to expect from Pacific Rim 2

Expect the Pacific Rim sequel to be far more than a rerun of the first film....

The week started with the rather terrific news that we are definitely going to get a sequel to Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. The movie has been confirmed for release in April 2017, and del Toro is returning to direct. Zak Penn is penning the script, following story ideas from Travis Beacham.

Chatting to the Wall Street Journal, del Toro was asked about the new film, saying the process was about "let's keep kicking ideas till we find one that really, really turns the first movie on its ear, so to speak". And it sounds like he did. "We came up with a really, really interesting idea. I don't want to spoilt it, but I think at the end of the second movie, people will find out that the two movies stand on their own. They're very different from each other, although hopefully bringing the same joyful giant spectacle. But the tenor of the two movies will be quite different".

Inevitably, and rightly, del Toro is holding the more specific details back. But however Pacific Rim 2 turns out, you can hardly accuse it of being a rushed into production, two-year turnaround sequel.

In other words, del boy watched the recent Godzilla, had a head in hands moment, and elected not to make a purile cheese fest as he did with the first move.

Are you sure you weren't watching Transformers?...I jest! I liked it though, nothing wrong with a bit of cheese. Out of interest what do you think was purile?

Everybody wants Hellboy 3 Guillermo, nobody gives a toss about Pacific Rim-job 2. Sort yourself out.

All of it!

Watched this, but it has quickly faded into obscurity.

So if Pacific Rim was about Robots vs Aliens... will Pacific Rim 2 be about Aliens vs Robots?

Mountains of Madness !!

I don't get why people hate on pacific rim so much. It was always billed as a homage to series like neon genesis evangelion and gundam. As such it works a treat and I for one love it. Its cheesy because its meant to be people.

Completely the opposite of me, couldn't give a damn about Hellboy 3. But then when did people on the internet ever talk about themselves without thinking they speak for everyone?

Want both!! *stamps feet

GDT has an idea for a sequel? Whoa!!! Careful with that Info dump, DoG

;)

The masses are ignorant and stupid. They require a spokes person.... and I appoint myself the best man for the job.

I'll watch this.

Awful, awful, awful dialogue for one. Visually very pretty, I loved the fights, the look of the monsters, robots, visual design etc all that was great. Everything else was utter gash.

I liked the bit where Stringer Bell did his speech

Then the third one will be about Alien Robots vs Alien Robots - it's slowly morphing in to Transformers

*transforming in to Transformers

I'm with you on this hatchleader, absolutely loved the film. Unashamed fun! If I'd watched it at the age I watched Jurassic Park I could easily see it having been as incredible. Love it as an adult but as a kid it would absolutely have blown my mind!

I want both! GIVE ME BOTH!

...and many much older sources - Tokusatsu / Kaiju stuff from Toho studios (50s - 70s), Mazinger Z, Ultra Man, Space Giants, Gatchaman...

Mazinger Z!!!! Now THAT needs to be a movie.

It's an odd one for me - I kind of enjoyed the first one, but as it was a Del Toro movie it came with a lot more 'expectation baggage' attached. I simply didn't find it as good as his other movies, and was less able to switch off and enjoy because I know he can do better (or at least make stuff I like more).
If it were another director I'd be fine with the idea of a second one, but in Del Toro's case I just see this as the least interesting potential project on his slate. It doesn't bother me at all that Michael Bay keeps making Transformers movies, because there's isn't anything else I'd prefer him to be making, but I'm still waiting for Del Tor's 3rd Hellboy movie, his stop motion Pinocchio project and if anybody will ever back it Mountains of Madness.

Only if they keep the original song. Loved that cartoon growing up.

C'mon, they cancelled the apocalypse!

I think the working title is actually Alien Vs Robot: Dawn of Justice.
