Guillermo del Toro writing Pacific Rim 2
Work has begun on a screenplay for Pacific Rim 2, although Warner Bros hasn't yet greenlit the film...
Reports of the box office underperformance of Guillermo del Toro's excellent Pacific Rim proved to be premature over the summer. While the expensive blockbuster only just made it over the $100m mark at the US box office, elsewhere in the world, it proved a lot more successful. Ultimately, it grossed $407m worldwide, bouyed by a sizeable rally in China. And whilst Warner Bros HQ takes a smaller slice of the take for those Chinese revenues, at the very least it opens up funding possibilities for a Pacific Rim 2. Back in July, that didn't seem quite as likely.
Fortunately, either nobody tells Guillermo del Toro such things, or more likely, he pays no heed to them. As such, he's revealed to IGN that he's already working with Travis Beacham on a script for Pacific Rim 2. "That is active", he confirmed, adding that "the decision to green light or not, that's definitely above my pay rate".
If it were on our pay rate, we'd green light it tomorrow. Sadly, we're several scales below del Toro's, never mind the heads of Warner Bros. As such, we shall green light our decision to buy a ticket for Pacific Rim 2, should it get made. That's as far as our influence goes.
Pacific Rim is on DVD and Blu-ray in the States now, and will be out in the UK next month.
