Disney planning Oz The Great And Powerful 2

Sam Raimi's Oz The Great And Powerful is already looking like it's getting a sequel...

The indications are pointing to Disney having a pretty big hit on its hands with Oz The Great And Powerful, which arrives in cinemas today. The movie, directed by the mighty Sam Raimi, has been gathering up impressive reviews. And box office projections have been sizeable.

With that in mind, perhaps it's no surprise that Disney is already putting together the parts of a potential sequel. Variety reports that Mitchell Kapner has been hired to put a screenplay draft together, and he'll dig into some of the other written work of L Frank Baum for his inspiration. Kapner's credits to date include The Whole Nine Yards and Into The Blue 2. Work apparently began a good month or two ago.

It's unclear as of yet if Sam Raimi would be returning to direct whatever Oz The Great And Powerful 2 ends up being called. But unless the box office predictions are widely off the mark, which we suspect they're not, then he might just be getting a phone call about the job soon.

As a fan of the Oz books, I really want to see them faithfully adapted one day because they never have been. It's very frustrating... it's like being a Harry Potter if the only adaptations that existed where A Very Potter Musical, an origin musical saying that Voldemort was good and a glossy, big budget movie set before the first book... I dunno... I just want to see a film where the Emerald City isn't green, when the Wicked Witch isn't green and only has one eye... just something closer to Baum's books. All adaptations take their cues from the Judy Garland film but that's not accurate at all.

I feel the same (I had a lot of the books on tape) but I think the imagery created by the MGM Oz is too ingrained in public consciousness. Maybe a future animated adaptation is its best chance

Pure marketing hype. If the first one bombs (which, admittedly, it probably won't), this sequel talk will dry up FAST.

PLEASE use the baum books they are Oz

Saw the movie a couple days ago and Im pretty sure the Emerald city was not green in this film
