Magic Mike XXL: director found, summer 2015 release locked
UPDATE: Magic Mike 2 will be arriving in cinemas in July 2015...
UPDATE: In addition to the news that a director has been found for Magic Mike XXL, we now know when to expect the film. Warner Bros has set it for July 3rd 2015 - two days after the release of Terminator: Genesis. Our original story follows...
Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike - a film he developed in conjunction with its star, Channing Tatum (who in turn based it on his own experiences) - was a monster hit, making $167m from a budget of $7m. That's a hugely impressive feat for any film, let alone one with such an impressive cast and one that's firmly aimed at adults. Sequel talk thus swiftly followed.
Well, now it seems as though things are moving forward as longtime Soderbergh assistant Greg Jacobs has signed up to direct Magic Mike XXL. Channing Tatum, who also co-wrote the original, was for a time linked to direct and at this stage it's safe to assume he'll be one of the original cast that will be returning for the sequel. It's believed that most of the cast will be back.
In particular, one such cast member that we can expect back is Joe Manganiello, who announced that the project will shoot this autumn. Hopefully his return to Tampa will inspire him to get the Macho Man Randy Savage biopic going (check out his Nerdist interview from last year).
