Guillermo del Toro on Justice League Dark

Guillermo Del Toro - currently a happy man.

The Justice League Dark project will be spearheaded by Constantine, Guillermo del Toro reveals. More details here...

The WonderCon convention that was held over the weekend did little at all to dampen the growing buzz surrounding Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. Not that we want to dampen it: our ticket was sold some time ago, and while it may not be this summer's most lucrative blockbuster when everything's tallied up, it may yet be many peoples' favourite.

The footage that was presented by del Toro at WonderCon certainly went down well. But then so did the panel that the director gave too. One question in particular has pricked plenty of ears up.

It had been known for a while that del Toro was working on a darker Justice League tale for Warner Bros. But he's put some proverbial flesh on the bones when asked about the project. He revealed that the lead character in the film that's likely to be called Justice League Dark is John Constantine (you may remember that Keanu Reeves has already played the role on film), although del Toro's take on the character will be blonde. And other characters we can expect to see are Swamp Thing, The Spectre, Zatanna and The Demon.

The narrative will centre, it seems, around Constantine's recruitment drive. And del Toro explained that "We get to their origin through the story. We don’t make the origin story at the top. We find it out as they each have mysteries to solve. Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is, but Deadman still needs to figure out who shot him. It’s all woven in. When I was a kid, my two favourite characters in the whole DC Universe were Etrigan and Swamp Thing, so I’m in heaven".

del Toro does still have a queue of projects. He's got to get Pacific Rim out into the world firstly, and then he's going to move onto horror project Crimson Peak. After that though, it might just be that Justice League Dark gets the go ahead. We'll be keeping you posted.

That's got me keen. Would love to see Etrigan on the screen (not to mention Zatanna's fishnets)

This could be great.
Especially if it eventually ties into Man of Steel etc...

The darker side of the comic characters has always been my favourite read for 30 years. Very much looking forward to seeing the Spectre and Etrigan, but please don't leave out Deadman

What's this? A comic book movie that takes a "dark gritty" approach?

My God!, what'll they think of next?!?!

I'm glad some of the fringe characters are getting their own platform without relying on a mainstream "star" to prop them up and possibly steal the limelight. Interested to see how it turns out.

...About characters that are essentially dark and gritty? It's not the same as them trying a dark approach with superman or any other comic character because these characters actually exist in darker comics. I imagine this would be a film that travels across the different supernatural realms explored in the comics so it definitely wont be the same as the batman trilogy in terms of its 'grittiness'.

Never been a fan of the superhero comics but I did enjoy reading the tales of Swamp Thing and Hellblazer. Certainly looking forward to seeing how this progresses!

this would be epic! but I cant see it happening if there touch and go on JL and have a wait and see attitude for MOS then it will be all talk atm.
Fingers crossed , also another pioint GT hasnt had much luck in getting films made as well which is a travesty

No Keanu Reeves, please.

You can see his passion for this project already. I don't know anything on the characters , but this could be good.

A few days ago, it was announced that Bruce Timm will take a sabbatical from WB animation. Rumor has he might be "involved" with the live action JLA film. If so, perhaps he could co/plot both films on a common mission - something that involves a bridging element. My guess is that the only hero welcome on both teams would be Batman.

Why can't he concentrate on creating Hellboy 3, the first 2 were amazing!

The only bad news is that it's going to be a while before this goes into production. If Superman/Justice League doesn't do well than I hope this doesn't get cancelled. I don't think I've been this excited for a superhero film since Watchmen and The Avengers went into production.

What's this about Crimson Peak? When's it out?

Um Hellboy 3 first PLEASE! Ron isn't getting any younger! Finish what you started del Toro!!!
