Judge Dredd movie pressing ahead?

It’s got a director. The script is in place. Judge Dredd might, this time, actually be returning to the big screen…

It's been a year or two since there was last word on a possible new Judge Dredd film hitting the big screen, and in truth, one of our initial feelings was that we'll be surprised if we ever get it. That's not just down to the fact that the 1995 Sylvester Stallone vehicle bearing Dredd's name was a divisive movie, but also that its box office returns were comparably low, and the budget needed to properly realise Dredd would not be small. In theory, anyway.

However, from the Cannes Film Festival, it's being reported that Dredd might just have got his green light. The movie is reportedly going to be made for around the $50m mark - so it'll be interesting to see just how creatively that can be spent - and its script has been penned by Alex Garland.

Furthemore, Dredd has a director: Pete Travis has reportedly signed on the dotted line to helm the film. Travis previously put together the decent-if-hardly-spectacular Vantage Point.

It's also been revealed that the film will be released in 3D, and according to Deadline New York, the plan is to go right back to the comic's origins for the new movie.

Not for the first time, let the Judge Dredd casting speculation begin below in the comments. If only Clint Eastwood was younger...
