Independence Day

The on-again off-again relationship between Will Smith and Independence Day 2 appears to have finally come to an end.

There had been a glimmer of hope that Will Smith would reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller in Independence Day 2, but now it appears as though the star is officially out.

The rumours of his return have been back seesawing for some time, and seemingly director Roland Emmerich and co-writer and producer Dean Devlin were well prepared for Smith deciding not to return as they have two separate versions of the script. One had him in it, one didn't. As it's turned out, it's being reported that Smith has now informed all concerned that he definitely won't be returning.

The film is currently scheduled for a release date on July 1st 2016, which marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the original. And whilst Smith won't be back, both Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are set to reprise their roles from the original.

Good! he probably wanted to cast his annoying son Jayden into the film.

Agreed! He's no great loss IMHO and it's a relief that with his lack of involvement those brats won't be either :)

Will Smith is an actor desperately in need of a good movie.

I suspect that's been the deciding factor, they wouldn't let his kid be in it, so he won't do it. Smith doesn't appear to understand that his kid's horrible acting and this constant nepotism isn't doing his career any favours.

I doubt this is going to end up a good movie

probably not but probably still better than some of the crap he's been in recently :-)

Well, so far they've only announced that Will Smith isn't in the film, so it would be good to have it confirmed by someone that Jayden isn't either. Just to be sure.

We have The Goldblum so all is right with the world

O heck yeah! Let's make 2016 the comeback year of Jeff Goldblum with this movie and Jurassic World!

I totally agree, that kid annoys the hell out of me. I realize its a "Who you know world" but talent and watchability has to count for something.
We all know that Jayden Smith is a dreadful actor, as well as being utterly obnoxious, & wouldn't have a chance if not for his Dad. Will Smith is a good movie star. But it doesn't mean ether of kids are automatically going to be.
"You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" kind of deal. Give it up Willy. And let some unknowns with real talent have the chance you did.

Will Smith may not be the most over-rated, over-exposed actor of his generation - but whack Johnny Depp in some dark alley, and Will just might get the nod.

Surely there can't be a sequel as there's no way the intergalactic alien mothership which travelled billions of light years to destroy Earth, would have survived a virus uploaded from a 1990's Apple Mac computer.

his last couple of movies probably caused a spike in the sale of prozac
