Guardians Of The Galaxy roles revealed

We now know exactly who Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan and Lee Pace are playing in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy...

Work is underway on Marvel's big gamble for 2014, its film of Guardians Of The Galaxy, which is now shooting in the UK. James Gunn is directing, and an impressive ensemble has been gathered together for the movie.

Three of the names on the cast list are Benicio del Toro, Lee Pace and Karen Gillan, and while it was suspected that del Toro was set to play The Collector, we now have confirmed from a solid source just who is going to be who in the film.

So then: Benicio del Toro is, indeed, The Collector in Guardians Of The Galaxy. Also confirming an earlier rumour, Lee Pace is definitely going to be playing Ronan The Accuser. Karen Gillan, meanwhile, will be playing Nebula in the film.

A quick rundown of just who each of those characters are, then. The Collector is one of the oldest characters in Marvel's universe, given that he dates back billions of years, protecting the universe in the way he sees fit. He can see, to an extent, the future, and it was he that foresaw Thanos, whose role in the Marvel cinematic universe has already been introduced, and is expected to be heavily expanded.

Ronan The Accuser, meanwhile, first popped up in Fantastic Four comics, and he's a member of the Kree, an alien race. He's got a fair number of superhuman powers, and while originally a villain, he has shown a more heroic side, too. For the purposes of the film, we'd imagine you don't want to get on the wrong side of him, though.

Nebula, meanwhile, is a villain and space pirate, who claimed to be the granddaughter of Thanos.

Gillan, Pace and del Toro are set then, at first at least, to be a villanous trio to go head to head with the Guardians Of The Galaxy. How much Thanos we get remains to be seen.

A full casting announcement is coming at Comic-Con at the end of the month.

This is all good stuff but...

What about Rocket Raccoon? Is that why Disney called a meeting with Vin Diesel?

Enquiring minds wanna know....

Yes, I've been wondering that too. I think he has something to do with Vision though.

Interesting. Having Ronan in place brings in the Kree Empire, possibly with a view to creating a Ms/Captain Marvel film at a later date. I would have put money on Gillan playing Medusa, but Nebula could be a good way of introducing Thanos.

I thought that the Del Toro was in a multi-picture deal? Not sure there is enough mileage in the Collector for that, but at this point, I have a lot of faith that Marvel knows exactly what they are doing

Where do all these Vision rumours come from? I just don't see the Vis/Vin link. The Vision is more logical and cold, where as Vin would be much better playing a bad-ass.

I really hope he's doing Rocket. He'd be perfect for that

Oh my word.

Gillan will make an awesome Nebula *o*

She was made to be a super-villain!!!

They come from just a thing Vin said. In one of the interviews about his films he said he would like to play Vision. That's all.

This film just gets better. I can see the Thanos storyline involving the Infinity Gauntlet. 2014 might just be the best year for MCU films, Winter Soldier also looks awesome.

Vision, ms marvel, man I want to see this happen! Sure I like vin as rocket raccoon on account of the iron giant, but his voice could work for vision too. Anyway, if you throw in she hulk, I can see avengers disassembled, what with scarlet witch and all. I'm excited.

Just as long as Nebula dresses up at some point as a policewoman ... :)

Awww really wanted Gillan to be Angela :*(

To be honest, if she is wearing the usual Nebula outfit, you won't miss the police uniform.....

AH-ha, thanks!

I really don't know the Guardians of the Galaxy stuff at all.

But, for old times sake, it would be fun to see her as we first met Amy Pond ...

Really hoping James Gunn is more involved with the screenplay than Brian Michael Bendis.Wishing Gillan and everybody involved the best of luck for the shoot considering the project isn't a stand out property for a Marvel film and isn't a commercial certainty.Since i'm unfamiliar with notable stories with the characters,i'm in the unusual situation of being interested in the film because of the creative talent attached to it and how it relates to Marvels' overall plans for the rest of their films.Looking forward to Gillan playing a villain and working some action scenes as i always found her Doctor Who work to be pretty decent in that regard.Really wish she was playing Medusa because Medusa is a favourite Marvel character of mine and i can't imagine anybody else doing a better job of playing her.

No, it's more likely for him to voice Groot, the walking sentient tree whose only spoken line is "I am Groot!" in various tones and pitches. Clearly a role right up Diesel's alley in the Marvel realm, based on his Iron Giant voicing. Fans figured his busyness with his newly-successful Fast & Furious franchise that he wouldn't have time for committing to a full Marvel role so voicing would be easier. In reference and announcement to his meeting with Marvel, Dieself posted "You [the fans] would know more about than me, haha".
However, if you recall back when Avengers was on the big screen, fans of Diesel's facebook page noticed he changed his profile pic to an image of the android Avenger for just a moment. People took that as a little hint that he wants to play the Vision, which could also suit his cold, emotionless, deep-voiced, chrome-dome acting performances while also being a bad-ass android with a lot of neat abilities that start out as a threat to the Avengers (since he is Ultron's creation with the initial function to take them out) but later joins them. But none of that can come to fruition until Dr. Henry Pym (Ant-Man) makes his appearance in Phase 3, since he will have to first accidentally create the villainous life-eradicating robot Ultron, whom then goes on to create the Vision.

I can't believe I am actually excited for this movie. Marvel
Studios must have made a deal with Mephisto or Hela or _______ .

This is going to be either awesomely awesome, or...

What? as a 10 year old girl?!? What's wrong with you?!?

As the faux policewoman, genius, as I already said two or three times.

Karen Gillan ain't 10.

Waste your own time with jabber.

Google could not have said it better. Unless you googled it, that is

i would have prefered Nikki or Aleta.

I'll take that as a compliment, since that's all my own knowledge of the goings-on of Marvel. Disclaimer: I never read any comics as a kid growing up but collected all the trading cards, so while I'm a huge Marvel fan/enthusiast my knowledge of all the characters will still have holes in it. The Vin Diesel part I heard about over the radio last year when even music stations were talking all about Avengers movie stuff and mentioned him changing his Facebook prof photo. The Groot stuff came from simply Like-ing the MCU on Facebook and they posted about it recently. I even have the whole set of collector cards that includes that Nebula card shown in this article, so I guess I better brush up on her.

Medusa might still be a character tied more closely to Fantastic Four stuff, which Fox still owns the rights (pray they revert back to Marvel soon so a reboot can be done and then tie them and the Inhumans into the MCU). But Ronan being Kree (rivals to the Skrulls, which are a F4 villain/race and Kerry Washington's Alicia Master in the F4 movies becomes Lyja, a Skrull spy). And even if u introduce Medusa, what about the most powerful Inhuman and their king, Black Bolt? A man with the most extreme vow of silence ever since even his slightest whisper can shatter a mountain. Imagine that on the big screen.

Yes compliment. And now I know more comic book movie stuff, thanks. Too bad nobody I know cares. Denofgeek, you're my only hive-mind collective Borg thingy friend.

Who is this solid source?

Don't overly sexualise Gillan and just let her be a kickass female villaine please!

You are banned from the internet.

I can see the whole rights thing becoming an issue fairly soon. I don't know what was in the contracts that Marvel drew up with Fox, but they seem to have been a bit sloppy. I suspect that no-one thought the Superhero boom would go on as long as it did when they were drawn up.

For example, SIlver Surfer isn't a Fantastic Four character, he's a Silver Surfer character, but Fox helped themselves to the film rights for him for FF2. Marvel didn't question it at the time, because they didn't have any plans themselves, but now, they probably want him back for their "cosmic" phase. If Fox have to make a FF film every couple of years to retain the FF rights, wouldn't that apply to the Surfer too?

Seeing as Marvel are casting Quicksilver in the next Avengers, despite him being in the next X-men, I suspect they are getting a bit tired of Fox hoovering up every available character in the Marvel universe. Sooner or later, there will be a big falling out. I don't know much about how this sort of thing works, so this is all just speculation on my part, but it would make a great article, if anyone at Den of Geek is listening

'd actually like to see females taken more seriously in comic book films instead of being fap-fodder with big boobs.

Wouldn't surprise me. The guys an idiot.

Hah. Pwowned!

Hahahahah Hahahahah Hahahahah.

You missed the I off I'd.

According to io9, Vin just posted this on his wall....

"Marvel meeting today…
Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed…
P.s. Thanks to Our page, for pushing to make it happen… you know I get tunnel vision with my work… and after that meeting today… wow!"

hmmmmmm...what could it possibly mean?

He was a lot less well known when he did the iron giant voice, which for most of the movie sounded like 1000 wolves and mountain lions skinning each other alive. So, if he voices vision, he may actually play him with make up a la hellboy, which allow him more involvement. And if he played Rocket Raccoon, it would help gotg big time. Hopefully. Or he could be disney's non mutant professor X.

I know exactly how you feel...

Hahahahaha, this loneliness is killing me inside! I kid, I kid, I'm surrounded by loved ones; they just don't care about comic book movies! At least 2 of my sisters love other geeky movies and my wife loves Potter and Hobbits. My cousin tricked me: he just likes Iron Man! Oh well. Cheers to denofgeek!

Correction one of those sisters loves the dark knight trilogy and really liked iron man 3 and avengers. Tony stark, you're too cool for the other avengers' sakes!

All these vision rumors come from the fact that he said he was reading vision comics and changed some profile pic to vision.

Been in the filming as an extra. Director a humourless geek, Saldana talentless airhead, Chris Pratt good bloke but unconvincing. Rocket and Groot will be embarrassing.

........just saying

Pardon my scepticism, but it seems to me that rival studios might be interested in planting negative comments in public forums like this, since this film is based on a less familiar Marvel comics property.Disappointing to see somebody claiming to be part of the cast rubbishing the people he was working with on the internet anyway.
