With G.I. Joe: Retaliation notching up good box office returns, Paramount is pressing ahead with G.I. Joe 3...

After pulling in some quite impressive numbers in its opening weekend, Paramount has decided that G.I. Joe: Retaliation has already done well enough to justify it pressing ahead with a third instalment of the cinematic franchise. The $41.2 million it took over the Easter holiday in America is second only to Clash Of The Titans' take at a similar time, which in 2010 pulled in $61.2 million. When you factor in the $80m that G.I. Joe: Retaliation has already picked up outside of the US as well, then it seems as though Paramount has won its gamble to move the film out of last summer.

After all, the decision to delay it the film at the eleventh hour by nearly a year, so it could be released in less crowded market, has paid off. And a new sequel will now press ahead. Rumour has it that the next film will be shot in 3D rather than having to go through a post conversion process. That does mean that, shoudl Paramount delay the release of the next movie, it might just need a different excuse.

Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have already hinted that they have ideas for a third instalment and a list of characters they would like to use. We'll let you know whether they get the job or not. More news on G.I. Joe 3 when it's available.
