Exclusive: Frank Grillo on his Captain America 2 role and The Raid remake

News Ryan Lambie 16 Jun 2014 - 07:00

Actor Frank Grillo tells us about reprising his role from Marvel's Captain America 2 and the state of The Raid remake...

Having begun his acting career in the early 90s, Frank Grillo has steadily built up an impressive body of work in TV and film, with some of his best big-screen roles including Warrior, The Grey and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

This year sees Grillo star in the action sci-fi sequel The Purge: Anarchy, and it was during an interview about this film, due out next month, that the actor told us a little bit about his future appearances. First, there's his character Brock Rumlow - also known as Crossbones - in Marvel's Captain America sequel. Was that a role he'd be returning to in the future?

"Well, I do know that I've signed on for multiple films, so yeah, it looks that way," Grillo told us, "but that's about as much as I'm allowed to say."

Then there's the American remake of Gareth Evans' martial arts film The Raid, which has had a couple of stories whirling around its production over the past couple of months - one being that it's delayed, and the other that its possible stars could include Anthony Mackie, Luke Evans, Ethan Hawke and Grillo. So is there any truth to these stories, we wondered?

"Yes," Grillo confirmed. "We were going to do it in September in Malaysia with Screen Gems. Great script, Patrick Hughes, a hot young director from Australia, he's directing it and rewriting it at the moment. We pushed it to January just because of how much time we need. It's me and maybe [Anthony] Mackie, so we may be reteaming from Captain America."

The remake, which sees a group of elite cops storm a multi-storey building full of drug dealers and criminals, will be a three-handed affair, Grillo told us, with he and (possibly) Mackie being joined by a third lead - though the actor couldn't tell us who the third star would be.

"There's three leads," Grillo continued. "And I'm one of those three guys."

Could Luke Evans or Ethan Hawke be playing that third lead? We'll just have to wait and see.

The Purge: Anarchy is out on the 25th July, and we'll be bringing you the full interview with Frank Grillo closer to its release.

Man, it is HELLA lonely on this Frank Grillo article! Where the heck is everybody? Still, at least I can find some peace here. Some sanctuary away from these red button issues like the new DC 'Bat V Supes' movie and whatnot. Here I can just be serene, tranquil and rest easy in the shared ambivalence the general movie going public has towards Frank Grillo, his career and opinions on anything movie related. Ah **PUTS FEET UP*** this is nice. lovely lovely.
