Joe Wright linked to Fifty Shades Of Grey movie

Could the director of Hanna and Atonement be directing Fifty Shades Of Grey?

Well, crikey. Universal is still pressing ahead with its plans to make a movie based on the book of respectable hardcore pornography, Fifty Shades Of Grey. And while the spurious casting guessing game appears to have ground to a halt for the time being, Variety has linked some surprising names with the director's chair.

Kelly Marcell is working on a script for the movie now, but Universal's top choice to direct the film is apparently Joe Wright. The same Joe Wright who made Atonement, Hanna and, more recently, Anna Karenina.

Other names linked with the job? Patty Jenkins (Monster), Bill Condon (the last two Twilight films), Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball) and Gus Van Sant (lots of things). Variety also reports that at one stage, Steven Soderbergh was a consideration.

Truthfully, there are lots of films we want to see from Joe Wright, but we're not sure that Fifty Shades Of Grey is one of them. If he does indeed sign up for the job, we'll let you know. Universal does seem keen to move this one forward now...

It's beginning to seem like everyone in Hollywood is going to be linked to this movie at some stage.

Please, please, don't do this to me, Joe Wright. PLEASE. I'm BEGGING you. Don't do this to me. Never.

And Gus Van Sant, come on, that is not even realistic. He's done so many interesting movies, why would he even look at this project. Impossible.

Porn? This book is not porn. It is just crap. If you want to read porn get good one from people who can actually write!

The only driver behind this is Universal's lust after a big fat paycheck. While I'm sure that whomever gets picked for this will try and make out that there's some sort of artistic merit in this sweaty wankfest for the timid, what it will actually do is soil their reputation.

And this is on Den of Geek why?

There is actually a very interesting story here, albeit badly written, and full of stereotypes, and it's complete wish fullfillment, mind numbingly simple, with nothing to make you think hard for very long. It's just about this incredibly sexy guy who because of previous abuse to him likes risque sex, and snares a stupidly naive girl into falling for him. And all his control issues seep out and make her life a misery. But if you deepen the character, and tone down the sex, this could be an interesting exploration of poession and insecurity and love being someones saviour. Just tone it down, and don't ram the happy ending down our throats.

A woman director should be ideal for this. If not, maybe David Lynch?

Women dreaming about a man invented by a woman...some people are unlucky in love.

They've picked the wrong Wright.

Now, have it screenplayed and directed by Edgar Wright. Main parts played by Nick Frost and Olivia Coleman.

That would be 50 shades worth watching.
