Harry Potter spin-off movie coming, J K Rowling scripting
Set 70 years before Harry Potter's stories, J K Rowling is penning a new film, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them...
Warner Bros has officially announced the first major big screen spin-off from the Harry Potter series, going by the name of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (although that may be the overarching series name, rather than the title of the film itself). It's based on the Hogwart's textbook of the same name, and there won't be a book this time around. Instead, J K Rowling is writing it as an original screenplay, and the plan is that this will be the first in a new series of films.
It's going to be set in the world of Harry Potter, but Rowling has confirmed that it's neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series. Instead, the focus will be on the fictional author of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, Newt Scamander. In the words of Rowling, "the laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway".
This one won't be just a movie, either. Plans are already afoot for a videogame and the usual collection of spin-off products.
Whether director David Yates can be tempted back to the world of Harry Potter remains to be seen. In the meantime, we'll keep you posted as and when we hear more about Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
