Joel Silver outlines his plans for a prequel trilogy to John Carpenter's Escape From New York...

There's been chat for some time about a new take on John Carpenter's Escape From New York, one of the few of his popular movies that hasn't had a new interpretation hit the screen over the past ten to 15 years. Producer Joel Silver is working away on this one, now revealing plans for a prequel trilogy to Carpenter's original film.

That said, there might be plans, but things are going slowly: there's no screenplay in place yet. But Silver has outlined to Collider what his approach is going to be.

"There was a videogame that came out a few years ago called Arkham City", he said, "which shows how when Gotham became this kind of walled prison and how it became a walled prison. And they never deal with that in the story of Escape From New York, so part of our idea was to kind of see how the city became this walled prison and how the Snake Plissken character was a hero and how he became not looked at as a hero".

He added that "and then, in the middle of the story would be the movie that we, you know, previously saw about the President’s daughter goes down, he has to go in and get her. And then, you know, they did a sequel, Escape From LA, but I would like to then kind of find a way to have New York go back to a place that we’d like to see what it is today".

Ambitious plans certainly. It's been around a year since Silver snapped up the rights, and it's evident that there's still a long way to go before we see a new take on Escape From New York on the screen. We'll keep you posted of any further developments we hear...

Groan, please just leave it where it lies. L.A really took all that was good about New York and flushed it down the toilet.

Enough is enough, yeah a prequel where we get to see the bank job that got Plissken to the facility in the first place, okay I can see that but to re-do a classic......come on.

So there isn't going to be anyone playing the President and who cold fill that role Pleasance played so well, "You are The Duke.......you are A-Number-1".

And what about Frank Doubleday, no one and I mean no one can take the place of that crazy dude.

And last but not least there will only ever be one Snake Plissken and that is Kurt motherf***ing Russell man, that dude abides man!

Fully backed. Bad idea; I have a novel concept for Hollyweird: write a new and original story, dummies.

The President's daughter? Did I miss something?

I heard this was dead...

It's really extraordinary just how far Hollywood will go these days to avoid having to come up with an original idea.

Call me "Snake", not remake

Erm excuse me but the President crashed in New York not his daughter that was LA.

If you are going to discuss a cult film at least get your facts right and if you are intended a prequel / reboot that at least know your stuff

Yeah, you and everybody else!

"......and how the Snake Plissken character was a hero and how he became not looked at as a hero"
.
And the award for clunkiest sentence structure goes to ........ Joel Silver! Come on up here ya big lug!

Escape from L.A was the one where he rescued the presidents daughter, NOT Escape from New York. he just rescue's the president in E from NY :/ And he's producing it you say???

The reason why New York was transformed in to a prison is already covered in the novelisation of EfNY, as is a significant chunk of Plissken's back story (his eyepatch and the need for the prison are not entirely unrelated, just not directly), so there's absolutely no need for this film.

I agree, and the poison was to control him wasn't it? So he'd do what they because he was the only man for the job...

haha laughed at that myself when I read it!

don't forget the one before;

"which shows how when Gotham became this kind of walled prison and how it became a walled prison"

he is a spastic, his ideas are spasticated

Go to hell Hollywood !

Why don't you and your board room gimps looking for a fast buck try and do something original and not saturating a classic with your shite sodding remakes and reboots. Respect the Carpenter and THE only Snake, Kurt Russell.

Why cant we just have kurt back and make the third film escape from earth?
Kurt is snake
