Doctor Strange movie: new writer, casting latest

Three names remain in the frame for Marvel's Doctor Strange, as Jon Spaihts is hired to rework the screenplay...

We've still not got a release date for Marvel's Doctor Strange movie yet, but there's no doubt remaining that it's happening. Scott Derrickson - shortly to launch Deliver Us From Evil into cinemas - is the man with the job of directing the film. And the latest on the project is that Jon Spaihts is being recruited to work on the screenplay for the movie.

Spaihts is working on the reboot of The Mummy for Universal. He penned the original screenplay, pre-rewrites, for Ridley Scott's Prometheus too. He's now going to rework the original Doctor Strange script, that Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer put together.

Furthermore, the casting shortlist for the title role apparently remains centred on a trio of names. And those names? Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jared Leto. More as we hear it...

Jared Leto is just too ridiculously good looking for the role in my opinion. Cumberbatch is a great actor but he might play it too much like Sherlock Holmes. Tom Hardy could be very interesting though.

People have already said it on this site but I'll say it again, Timothy Dalton.

He would be great, but he is maybe to old for the role. But imagine Dr. Strange with his voice!

Sadly too old, I think this version should be early to mid thirties, simply because it'll be his origin, but a good call, if he were 20 years your you couldn't cast any one better!

Oh gods, not fugging Cumberbatch the Chinless Wonder AGAIN.

I thought Leto would be ideal TBH. He could carry off the cock sure, full of himself surgeon personality quite well, and I think the looks go hand in hand with that. He has to be that handsome, alpha male, super talented doctor type, making his descent into poverty and homelessness more poignant.

Viggo Mortenson.....

Just read the article on The Rover. Guy Pierce

Duh. Just remembered he's in Iron Man 3. Shame

Tom Hardy would be a disaster, too short, to rough looking, Stephen Strange is an eloquent fellow, Can't imagine Tom pulling off intellectual.
Cumberbatch could do it but I think you could do better, Leto is an interesting choice but he's never come across as an assured presence and Strange is a confident man.
Viggo Mortenson could pull it off but I'm telling you Johnny Depp would have been fantastic, people keep thinking Jack Sparrow but I've seen Depp in the "Ninth Gate" which is a super natural film and he was effin brilliant, he could pull of Strange easily.

Depp would be ideal in my opinion.

None of these names are particular exciting.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.
