Despicable Me 2

Three new animated films from Illumination Entertainment are confirmed: and the minions of Despicable Me are returning again...

In a surprise to nobody, Universal has officially confirmed that Despicable Me 3 is happening. The second film, Despicable Me 2, has currently notched up $935m at the worldwide box office, and sold more than a few copies on DVD and Blu-ray too. The first spin-off from the series, The Minions Movie, is arriving in July 2015. And now we've got an official release date for Despicable Me 3 too. The movie will be arriving in cinemas on June 30th 2017.

Those aren't the only animated projects in the works at Illumination Entertainment though. For the firm is working on a previously-announced animated take on Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Granted, it's been animated before, and Ron Howard made a hugely successful live action take on the book, also for Universal. But the new version, which promises to be "newly-imagined" (Hollywood's current bullshit phrase for covering the same story again) is set to arrive on November 17th 2017.

Finally, a more mysterious Illumination production is coming from Garth Jennings, who previously brought live action projects The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and Son Of Rambow to the screen. His new film is "an original animated comedy about courage, competition and carrying a tune". It's currently without a title, but it does have a release date. You can expect it, whatever it is, on December 21st 2016.

More on all of those as we hear things.

Wankers, bloody wankers.
Even if the animation in this new Grinch film is good, which I'll give them that it probably will be, why in holy hell would anybody watch it over the Jim Carrey insta-classic that is still very much fresh in the publics mind. (And in my opinion, and many other peoples I personally know, the BEST Christmas film of our time!)

Why don't you guys actually do what you're stating in your phrase and 'newly imagine' something original?!
80s movies are one thing, but Christmas films, no.

Rant over.

Because the Jim Carrey version is awful and massacres the book, that's why. At least this version might be good - if not, there's always the 60s version to fall back on.

Because the Dr. Seuss stories work MUCH better in animated form, as proven hands-down by the much underrated 'Horton Hears a Who', a superb fun movie.

Well if it's anything like that then I most certainly shall not be watching it till it's free on Sky, Horton was not a very good film and none of the kids in my family like it (thankfully for me).
How akin to the story was the awful Cat in the Hat movie? Ridiculous tripe is what that was.

Not interested in it massacring the book, changing the format a piece of media is expressed on usually ends up with it being panned (film to video game & video game to film) or the fan base criticizes it because something was different/ not included (book to film (which subsequently may get a decent video game i.e. Harry Potter & Lord of the Rings (; ).

So in the nicest way possible, your argument is redundant IMO.

The film of "The Cat in the Hat" was as good as Jim Carrey's Grinch.

No, it simply was not, the storyline was ridiculous (oh no, the house is messy and Mike Myers' dressed as a giant cat whilst washing his career down the toilet.) and featured the most annoying children brought to film (IMO).
The story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is what it says on the tin, with THAT song and Jim Carrey in some pretty cool make up.
Miles better than TCitH.

How akin to the book was The Cat in the Hat film?

Wishlist time. Pharrell Williams usual score work in Minions and Despic' 3/A Jim Carrey cameo/small amount of involvement in The Grinch. This studio did an OK job with The Lorax and I think the Grinch'll be better!

Christmas isnt Christmas in our house without we watch Jim Carrey's The Grinch several times.
Best Christmas film EVER!!!!

Taylor Momsen did a pretty good job too in th Grinch
