A film of EA's Dante's Inferno game, based on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, is on the way...

A few years ago, Electronic Arts made a videogame called Dante's Inferno. This, in turn, was based in part on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, following Dante on his quest through the nine circles of Hell to try and save the soul of his beloved.

So, in short, a game based on a classic text.

Now though, we're getting a film based on a game based on a classic text, as Universal Pictures is bringing Dante's Inferno to cinema screens. It's recruited Fede Alvarez, who helmed this year's remake of The Evil Dead, to make the movie.

Inevitably, there's a question as to why Universal didn't save itself a few quid and go straight to the source text for an adaptation. Our best guess is that it either likes what EA did with the material, or it wants to piggyback someone's else's brand. Either way, expect the movie of the game of the text in the years ahead...
