Kenneth Branagh to direct Disney's Cinderella?

A live action take on Cinderella from Disney might just have found a new director in the shape of Kenneth Branagh...

While part of Disney's annual movie slate is accounted for by the combination of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar output, it also seems keen to pursue live action movies based on and around classic stories. Thus, we've had Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, Sam Raimi's Oz The Great And Powerful is incoming (with its roots in The Wizard Of Oz), while Malificent is due in 2013 (based around the Sleeping Beauty villain).

After that? Well, it's pressing ahead with a live action version of Cinderella, with Cate Blanchett on board to play the wicked stepmother.

The movie was set to be directed by Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go), but he departed the project last month. In his place? Well, it seems as though Disney is negotiating with Kenneth Branagh - who's currently making Jack Ryan for Paramount - to take the helm.

The plan is to shoot the movie this autumn in the UK, with an eye on a 2014 release date. More on the movie as we hear it.

I have to say that I've never really been that keen on the Cinderella story. Unless they've got a great script and a new angle, I don't think it's going to be that interesting. Beauty and the Beast, in my view is a better story and I'd prefer to see it made into a live action.

Cinderella doesn't really have a great story, but it's bound to make loads. Branagh deserves a big success.

Interesting. He totally rocked it as the director of Thor, so this could be something to keep a close eye on.
