The CHiPs movie has been greenlit, will be R-rated, and will take inspiration from the Lethal Weapon films...

This is definitely happening now. CHiPs has been greenlit, and was done a couple of weeks back. Michael Pena, chatting to Collider, has confirmed that the film will be set in the present day, and that he's been learning to ride a motorcycle.

Furthermore, the film's going to have something in common, tone-wise,with the Lethal Weapon films. "It’s more like a Lethal Weapon where there’s a lot of action and what we wanted to do is if there’s any comedy that we do, it’s not like one-liners here and there, like we’re the guys always being stand-up comedians. It’s almost like you lose a little bit of the plotline whenever you’re off doing your own comedy thing, so we’re focusing a little more on the plot, if that makes any sense whatsoever", Pena said.

The project is targeting an R-rating, and Vincent D'Onofrio is on board, along with Dax Shepard.

Our original story ifrom September 2014 is here...

Running from 1977 to 1983, the antics of the California Highway Patrol in CHiPs gave NBC a big hit show, one that enjoyed solid success over here in the UK too. The focus was on a pair of police officers patrolling the highways of California on their motorbikes, and several attempts have been made over the years to try and mount a movie version of the show.

However, Warner Bros is going to have another go.

The studio has hired Dax Shepard to star in, write and direct a CHiPs movie, with him taking on the role of Jon Baker (played by Larry Wilcox in the TV show). Michael Pena is set to play Frank 'Ponch' Poncherello (originally played by Erik Estrada). Shepard is reportedly looking to make CHiPs more along the lines of a buddy cop movie.

He previously directed Hit And Run, having done his own stunts there, given that he's a professional race car drive and keen motorcyclist. We suspect he'll find vehicular things to get up to on the CHiPs set too.

There's no date yet as to when we can expect the CHiPs movie, but it does now seem to have a good wind behind it. We'll keep you posted as we hear more....
