New details emerge for Neill Blomkamp's next film, Chappie
As Elysium emerges worldwide, new story details emerge for Neill Blomkamp's next film, Chappie...
As we revealed a few weeks ago, District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp's next film Chappie will be based on his early short film, Tetra Vaal. If you haven't seen it before, it was about a rabbit-eared police robot on patrol in a run-down South African city.
We know that Sharlto Copley will be appearing as the title robot, and he'll be joined by Dev Patel and rap musicians Ninja and Yolandi Visser. The Hollywood Reporter has recently revealed that Chappie has found financial backing from Sony and MRC, who bankrolled Elysium.
The bit that caught our eye, however, was a snippet of new information about what the story's about - after all, the original short film's a slight affair, and we've been wondering how Blomkamp and frequent collaborator Terri Tatchell might expand it. According to THR's brief plot description, "Chappie tells the story of a robot with artificial intelligence that is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes."
Blomkamp has said elsewhere that Chappie is a "ridiculous robot character" and that the story is "comedy based" - could we be in for a more blackly humorous sci-fi heist movie? We're certainly looking forward to finding out.
