Captain America: The Winter Soldier casting update

Who is set to play the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Here's the apparent shortlist...

There are things we already known about the sequel to Captain America, which is going by the name Captain America: The Winter Soldier. For instance, we know that Chris Evans is returning to reprise the title role. We know that Anthony Mackie has been cast as Falcon. And we also know that the film will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

There's still the small matter of the lead female role to sort out, though, even though we're still not entirely sure as to the identity of the part (Sharon Carter is the name that keeps getting mentioned). We're getting whispers of who's in the running for it, however.

Reportedly on the shortlist are Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones), Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay, Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night). Oh, and there's the small matter of Annie herself, Community's Alison Brie.

Given that the Russo brothers have worked with Brie before, as they directed some of the finest episodes of Community, that may work in her favour. With production not set to formally begin for a few months yet, they have a bit of time to sort all of this out yet, though.

More news on the casting when we get it. Expect Captain America: The Winter Soldier in cinemas in April 2014.

Both Deadline and Variety have that Black Widow will be in Captain America 2, as well, Variety saying it's 'confirmed'. Fingers crossed, because she was 'confirmed' for Iron Man 3 as well, but…

If the film is following the Brubaker Winter Soldier storylines of the comics then the presence of Black Widow is likely. It'd be nice to see her in the mix, but not if it's simply serving as a clunky cameo to crowds up a film that'll no doubt already have a lot going on...

If it's based on Brubaker's Winter Soldier, it would be hard _not_ to have her in it ;-)

I'm figuring that Marvel's aim is to slowly build up Black Widow as a character, adding more of her background each time, to the point where they could feasibly do a big spin-off solo movie in Phase 3. They have Johansson signed up for a number of non-specific Marvel movies, and Captain America 2 would be a natural fit, assuming the filming dates line up (Johansson's going to be on Broadway in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the start of 2013).

At the very least, it would be odd to have her just reappear in Avengers 2 and none of the movies in between. She's not in Thor 2 or Iron Man 3, and I doubt Guardians of the Galaxy needs Black Widow, so Captain America 2 is the only real option. Plus with Black Widow in both Winter Soldier and, erm, Captain America and Black Widow, it seems that's what Marvel Comics is pushing, too.

I would love to see Captain America become a member of Shield and then we can see through his character how Shield operates, which could produce some nice Fury and Captain America arguments. I hope as well that Black Widow is in it as if they're going down the route that she is the Russian's version of the Super-soldier then it's important that she plays a part.

It has to be Brie. They'd be very clever to cast a geek-bait actress like her. The Russo also have experience working with her.
Also, you know, there's the small matter of my being in love with her...

If being in love was a criterion, they'd find a way for Atwell to be in it again. *sighs*
