Who is set to play the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Here's the apparent shortlist...

There are things we already known about the sequel to Captain America, which is going by the name Captain America: The Winter Soldier. For instance, we know that Chris Evans is returning to reprise the title role. We know that Anthony Mackie has been cast as Falcon. And we also know that the film will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

There's still the small matter of the lead female role to sort out, though, even though we're still not entirely sure as to the identity of the part (Sharon Carter is the name that keeps getting mentioned). We're getting whispers of who's in the running for it, however.

Reportedly on the shortlist are Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones), Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay, Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night). Oh, and there's the small matter of Annie herself, Community's Alison Brie.

Given that the Russo brothers have worked with Brie before, as they directed some of the finest episodes of Community, that may work in her favour. With production not set to formally begin for a few months yet, they have a bit of time to sort all of this out yet, though.

More news on the casting when we get it. Expect Captain America: The Winter Soldier in cinemas in April 2014.
