Jeremy Renner will have to do battle with Edward Norton, in the upcoming The Bourne Legacy…

Now, here's a smart piece of casting news. Universal is busying itself putting together its upcoming new entry in the Bourne saga, The Bourne Legacy. This is the project that won't star Matt Damon, and nor will it be directed by Supremacy and Ultimate helmer, Paul Greengrass. Instead, the studio is effectively rebooting the franchise, with The Bourne Legacy telling a story in the world of Jason Bourne, rather than featuring him.

Tony Gilroy has signed up to direct, and already on board the project are Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz. But Variety is now reporting that Edward Norton is about to sign on to play the villain in the movie.

There's no word on just what his exact role will be, or how the story will pan out. But this is an encouraging piece of casting. We don't think we were alone in fearing for The Bourne Legacy, a film that struck us as being made for the wrong reasons. But there's a sheen of quality to the people Universal has attracted to the film, and we hold out hope that the end product might well be worthy of the franchise it's based within.
