Ben Affleck on Batman Vs Superman, Daredevil, fan reactions

News Simon Brew 4 Dec 2013 - 06:31

Ben Affleck talks about his Daredevil regrets, and why he overcame his initial reluctance to take on the role of Batman...

Since he was cast as Batman in Zack Snyder's upcoming Batman Vs Superman movie, Ben Affleck hasn't been on the receiving end of a great deal of online positivity. He's talked before about how he was warned that his casting wouldn't create, er, 'a reaction', but in a new Playboy magazine interview (yep, porn mags still get great interview access), he's expanded on it a little, saying "I expected that reaction".

Furthermore, he also said that when he was asked about playing Batman in the first place "I told them I don't see myself in the role and I was going to have to beg off". But that's when Warner Bros asked Affleck to take a look at what Zack Snyder had been working on, and "the stuff was incredible".

What was so special? Well, according to Affleck, "it was a unique take on Batman that was still consistent with the mythology. It made me excited. All of a sudden I had a reading of the character. When people see it, it will make more sense than it does now, or even that it did to me initially ... the idea for the new Batman is to redefine him in a way that doesn't compete with the Bale and Chris Nolan Batman but still exists within the Batman canon".

He added that "it will be an older and wiser version, particularly as he relates to Henry Cavill's Superman character", and that "if I thought the result would be another Daredevil, I'd be out there picketing myself!".

And he saved an extra comment for Daredevil too. "The only movie I actually regret is Daredevil. It just kills me. I love that story, that character, and the fact that it got fucked up the way it did stays with me. Maybe that's part of the motivation to do Batman".

Interesting stuff. Affleck is nobody's fool, and we'll find out in July 2015 just how true his words on the different take on Batman prove to be...

I'd see a movie starring Bale and written and directed by Nolan about a barman all day long, maybe they could remake Cocktail?

good luck man you are gonna need it

The year: 2021. Interview with Ben Affleck and his regrets on the Superman vs Batman movie he made back in 2015....

I am encouraged by the fact that he sees Daredevil for the disaster it was. I would have liked to hear his ideas as to what went wrong though, rather than "it got f**ked up". Shame an intelligent man has to use the F-word in a public interview. Bad grammar, too.

So does this mean he's going to be an older version of Bale's Batman?

People wouldn't have put Keaton in the suit either but he nailed it both as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Affleck will do the same.

No, it is a completely different Batman which is totally unrelated to Bale's brilliance.

Whether he's good in the role or not, it's far FAR too soon after the Dark Knight films to be putting Batman back on the big screen.

Any outing will be compared to the Bale/Nolan version of the character and people either won't like the difference or won't get that it's not the same character.

Expect to hear "So, it's not the same Batman as the Christian Bale one?" a lot.

Swearing and intelligence are not mutually twatting exclusive. :)

Uhh only film you regretted, excuse me, Gigli?

Yes, it truly is appalling that Affleck swore in an interview with a porn magazine.

Daredevil isn't that bad! It's not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but I think it's less problematic than people tend to say it is. At least it isn't Elektra.

I say he cant make this role his own, is it too soon after the dark knight trilogy - quite possibly but GL to him he's turned out to be a true proffessional in the industry.

Considering how soon it is after TDK trilogy, I would have thought it would have been best to continue with Nolans Batman. All be it a different actor.

Still does not seem to make sense to just have this new 'ageing' Batman character appear out of nowhere.

They could have at least mentioned in Man of Steel about some vigilante guy who dresses up as a giant bat. If this new 'ageing' Batman is indeed 'aged', it means he has been around for a while, which means he was worth talking about in Man of Steel surely?

All we got was a split second Wayne Enterprise logo on a satellite.

At least if they had mentioned him and maybe something about how he saved Gotham from a Nuclear bomb 'all those years ago' it would have tied in nicely.

Not seen it, but I had the same thought.

You'd think that would be the way to go eh? But no.

We're starting from scratch, with a new Batman, however he is an aging Batman and been around for a while.

Nolan had finished his trilogy and Bale had declared he only ever wanted to be Nolan's Dark Knight... just how would they have continued Nolan's Batman?
Don't get me wrong, I dislike the idea of this film in principle... it's way too early and is just built as a cash cow.

Like I said, they could have done it with a different actor, not Bale.

It's not ideal, but surely it would make more sense.

However, I am MASSIVELY over speculating this new film, as we all are. Everyone at the studio is saying how amazing this new Batman is and how it ties into Snyders DC World, so hopefully they are right and we are wrong!

I just want to see the costume.
Kevin Smith leaked enough podcast hints (one word was bleeped, but supposedly audience members say it was either "Noel" or "Lee") to get me seriously hyped for that alone. My expectation is that it will be less like the shiny segmented body armour of Bale, and a more comicbook heavy-duty fabric like the Captain America movie.

The directors cut in particular is good.

Still no.

Personally now that I think about it - I can see Affleck doing a better job as Daredevil instead.

Does this mean Holywood are intending to do a live film version of The Dark knight returns which for once might be true to the comic? I hope they do, still not sure about Mr Affleck.

The haters probably never even saw the Daredevil movie. If they simply tamed down the stunts, instead of making them so unbelievable, a wider audience would have appreciated it. Lets give Ben a shot, who knows how it turns out

Tarantino put it perfectly. It doesn't matter who plays 'Batman' because he's a guy in a suit. Whether Batman works or fails is entirely a product of the directing and camera-work. What matters is whether Affleck can play the version of Bruce Wayne that they're interesed in, which (from what we know so far) seems to be more in keeping with the older, jaded Michael Keaton version than the Christian Bale playboy version. I see no reason why that couldn't be within Affleck's scope.

True, Stephen Fry can cuss like a good 'un!

Good point, forgot that!

Well who says it's not going to be? Sure they may deny and not say it but at the end of TDK Wayne had 'left it all behind' giving away a lot of his fortune, he wouldn't have given it all up but without the aid of Wayne Enterprises, Alfred or his other allies you may see a more batterd steam-punk style batman, cobbled together gadgets, patched up suit. It would not be a big leap to think that he's come out of retirement after seeing these super beings tear down metropolis....

with so many "announcements" that aren't anything to do with what will happen in the movie, the recent casting news of wonder woman and speculation about the appearance of doomday as a villain, is it just me or is this movie sounding worse and worse all the time? in this day and age, where superhero movies have never had it so good, why are DC struggling to bring a coherent movie-verse to the screen? Marvel did it (effortlessly) compared to DC's efforts.

You tried to hard. Lesson: Never try.

Jersey Girl?

By the time the summer of 2015 comes around I will be very excited for a new batman and a new superman. Then they will be together and it should be awesome for the 2-3 hours I get to see it. Throw in some other Justice Leaguers and it will be that much better knowing that it is setting up a whole universe. I love the Marvel movies and I am glad they only do 2 a year, but I want more comic book movies and this should fill the gap nicely.
