Sigourney Weaver on the Alien films, reprising Ripley

Ellen Ripley's adventures may not be done, teases Sigourney Weaver as she discussed the Alien movies...

Sigourney Weaver was one of the attendees at the Hero Complex Film Festival over the weekend, and she took part in a Q&A between screenings of Ridley Scott's original Alien and James Cameron's follow-up, Aliens. And inevitably, she was asked a lot about the character of Ellen Ripley.

"Had we done a fifth one, I don't doubt that her humanity would have prevailed", Weaver told the assembled crowd. "I do feel like there is more story to tell". And that tease of a possible return was extended further, when she said that "I feel a longing from fans for the story to be finished", adding that "I could imagine a situation where we finish telling the story".

Alien: Resurrection, however, isn't the easiest place to pick the adventures of Ripley up from, and the immediate future of the Alien saga lies with Prometheus 2, which may well be the film that joins the first Prometheus movie up with the original Alien film. After that? Ellen Ripley may return, but it feels like a long shot...

Ripley's story IS finished, it ended properly with the sorely underrated majesty that was 'Alien 3' (2010 remastered Blu Ray extended cut)... let it go, Sigourney honey!

Hear hear. The blu ray extended cut of Alien 3 is glorious. I would like to see Ripley back - maybe as a hologram or a ghostly recording in Prometheus 2 or 3 just to link up the series, but her actual story did end with Alien 3. The 4th movie wasn't technically Ripley but a clone / hybrid - and the movie was a bit pants.

I agree with Northern Star. Her story was over in Alien 3.

There is no longing from fans to see her story finished. Well, I guess there was back in '92.

After the horrors of Alien Resurrection (first time I was ever tempted to throw popcorn at a movie screen) I'd prefer it if they left Ripley be, so we can all pretend the whole hybrid thing never happened and the series ended with dignity in Alien 3.

Ripley's story is done. Leaving fans wanting more is the best way to leave it, as any attempt to fulfill that desire will only be a huge let-down. The story ended, the character has superb credibility, leave it there!

They could do a version of ALIEN: Earth War from the graphic novels that picks up after RESSURECTION but without Hicks and Newt of course.

It's the only blu-ray in my box set I have never put into my player.

There is literally no point what so ever for that film to exist.

I think they just wanted to make another 'Aliens', with explosions and guns. But they missed the point entirely.

There is a away to rid alien 4 and even 3! In the book you can record dreams and view others dreams, Prometheus showed this. You make the last two flicks dreams, that Ripley had while they are on the escape craft from the suluco

I tried to defend Alien 3 a bit when it came out for being 'brave' and a bit 'arty', but last time I watched it my draw dropped so low, I was like 'how the **** did this ever get made. How the ****! did they make the decisions they did!'. It is an absolute stinker of a film, absolutely terrible. I'll check out this extended cut you mention though :-)

yes! pretend Alien 3 never happened! :-)

go back even further and pretend Alien 3 didn't happen...

absolutely loved A3

It's more a case of what was taken away by the studio. From what I've read in interviews, Fincher's original vision had a lot more to it, and his final cut had a good 30 minutes hacked off, including an entire subplot for Paul McGann's character, Golic. I haven't seen the extended cut yet either, but I've always had a soft spot for the film because I loved the tone of it, and because I think it's the most beautiful they've ever made the alien look.

The extended cut of Alien 3 is incredible. Woefully underrated.

how about this: Ripley and the gang end up on earth which has already been invaded by xenomorphs and (20?) years later she is the leader of a pack of survivers in the last fortified mega-settlement on earth....

I think we should all just forget Alien3 and Resurrection were real... start a new Alien 3 with the Sulaco being found in deep space the cryo pods malfunctioned, whilst sustaining life have allowed Ripley, Newt and Hicks to age.... kick story off from there.

Edit: I preferred Resurrection to Alien3 but both were bad.

They shouldve gone with the Dark Horse comic story, in where we lose the Earth and find out who the space jockey race was-look it up, its a stunning graphic novel. i did mention that its poss, to complety remove alien 3 and 4 by making them into dreams of ripleys that where recorded while she slept. Dream viewing and recording are hinted at in the alien novel and in prometheus-come on alien 4 looks like a nightmare and so did alien 3! Bring bacg newt and hicks.

I always liked it, the assembly cut is far better in general but you don't see the alien burst out of her

Oh honey...

And then they capture a xenomorph, train it, and send it back in time to change the timeline and save humanity.

I could be wrong but I was under the impression that Alien 3 was originally going to be about the xenomorphs coming to earth, however Weaver is a massive hater of guns and didn't want to do another Aliens - hence Alien 3. Which I do think is a decent film, the theatrical cut no where near as good as Fincher's director's cut however (but at the time he didn't have the pulling power to stand up to Fox that he does now).

yeah yeah totally, if it were a standalone film it would be pretty quirky, but as cannon.... :-(
