First synopsis for M Night Shyamalan's After Earth

Could the pairing of M Night Shyamalan and Will Smith produce one of the blockbusters of 2013? Here's the first synopsis for After Earth...

Whatever your thoughts regarding M Night Shyamalan's take on The Last Airbender, it turned out to be quite a solid hit. Solid enough, anyway, for the director to land another major blockbuster movie.

His next film, then, is next summer's After Earth, a science fiction flick that stars both Will Smith and his son, Jaden. Garry Whitta has penned the script, and not too much was really known about the film beyond that. However, with San Diego Comic-Con around the corner, it's been confirmed that there will be an After Earth panel at the event. And, in advance of that, we have our first official synopsis from the movie.

As always, if you want to go into the film completely cold, it's best to look elsewhere now...

“In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”

Make of all of that what you will. The film itself arrives in cinemas next June.

If I read the Synopsis before I read M Night Shyamlan, I would think this had promise.

Sounds like crap served on a bed of

To quote The Who:I won't get fooled again.Tried watching Last Airbender over the weekend:It's like he never even watched the excellent cartoon it was based on.The tone was way off,at its best it was flat(even though I watched it in 3D),at its worst it was cringe-worthy.Shyamalan is technically competent, what gives?Normally you can blame the source material;his idea. This time it seems he's not on script duties himself and that gives me a glimmer of hope. But then Wiil(oh-hell -no!)Smith is in it.Avoid.

A M Night Shyamalan film with Will Smiths Son... pass.

Eh, the post-apocalyptic setting is getting really stale. And The Last Airbender was awful even if you've never seen the series. I'll pass.

Does anyone else think this sounds like a mediocre Star Trek: Enterprise episode?

LOL.I was gonna say it was like a Deep Space Nine episode in my last post.Nice one.

Does anyone else wish that Will Smith and his godforsaken offspring would just die?

I couldn't even sit through Airbender but I really like his other work (even Lady in the Water and Happening after a few watches) but I have always been impressed with his camera technique and photography/cinematography so I will be watching this and hoping for a good visuals and whilst the storyline might be cliche, hopefully he can pull it off.

P.S. Does anyone even check for spelling mistakes (especially in headlines) any more??

I agree wholeheartedly. He's completely ruined film adaptations of 2 of my favourite books:I am Legend and I,Robot. And now there's Son of Smith to screw future adaptations of classics. At least we've got his music career.Wicky Wicky Wild West.; )

At what point will the son of Smith get chased by the wind..........

Amen. And I hate crappy names Cypher Raige, I mean c'mon.

Join General Shyte and his brave son, Nepo Tizm, in an adventure too-large for one planet!

If we were on facebook i would ask where the dislike button is. wow....that sounds REALLY bad

Satan and the Anti Christ, together at last for one film!

For awhile there he was one of the best directors at working with actors, pacing, use of sound design & his eye for camerawork undeniable, but he's gone off the rails from The Happening on (I'll admit Lady in the Water isn't perfect, but if you let yourself buy into it, it's fun and certainly different), but with The Last Airbender even the acting was awful & The Happening looked like he came up with the concept and someone else made the movie, it doesn't fit with his others. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs are all excellent movies, The Village and Lady in the Water have more merit than most people give them. Ever since The Happening I've been wishing he'd just work from someone else' screenplay for awhile, so this could be career redemption (particularly with Traffic/Syriana's Stephen Gaghan writing), but the concept just seems kind of lame... We'll see, here's hoping for the best.

Well I never check spelling.I let the machines do that for me,along with my laundry.

thats a bit harsh. he is a crappy actor, but come on....

"jake and ben sisko crash on a distant planet in the gamma quadrant with only meagre rations left from the ruins of their runabout" etc, etc

That's the one.

I admire your optimism. And also agree with much of what you said.Sixth Sense and Unbreakable(in my opinion his best film hands down) are excellent movies.Signs was decent but had some major flaws(aliens who are vulnerable to water invading a planet that is 70% covered in it).I feel The Village was were Shyamalans formula was beginning to wear thin and become predictable (I guessed the ending)even though it had a lot going for it,including a great cast.Lady in the Water, I seem to remember, got absolutely hammered on release.I was bored.Gonna rewatch it on your recommendation though. The Happening started strong and then went so off the rails you wonder how it ever got made at all.Airbender see above.Your right about his film craft and performances he gets from his actors.Best not to mention his cameos. He needs to do a 'Joel Schumacher ' and go back to basics. This project with Will Smith doesn't sound to me like the direction he needs to be going in for career redemption though.Concept is lame.See DS9 comments below.

Cypher Raige?

Hope Will performs a catchy tune for the sound track, all together now, "Wicky wah" etc..

I get why so many people dislike Signs, but it's a drama about faith & redemption wrapped in an alien invasion movie & aimed by Disney's marketing at the blockbuster crowd. The Village has an even bigger identity crisis, as both the film and the marketing did their best to sell it as a supernatural thriller when really it's a quiet film about innocence & love. I don't think he needed that one to have a twist & that's probably a big part of what hurt it, if the audience is aware of the reality of the town elders & the main character isn't it probably would have worked better.

I'm optimistic yes, but like you I'm not convinced this is the project that'll right his career.

Man, a new M Night movie? Now I DO hope the world ends in 2012.

The spawn has already ruined the memory of one classic film - The Karate Kid. The little prick didn't even do karate, he did f**king kung fu. The film should have been called Kung Fu Knobhead.

Indeed. I was sorta excited about a new sci-fi Shyamalan movie, even with Will Smith. Then I read "Jaden" and this just became another movie I'll never watch. I can stomach watching Will Smith and Shyamalan can, I think, still make good movies (despite some recent stumbles), but not Smith Jr. He's a terrible actor, not that Sr. is much better, but he at least sticks to his strengths for the most part. I'm not sure Jr. has any.

But....maybe Jr. will be killed in the opening scene and Sr. will go on some kinda revenge thing - I'd pay to see that I suppose.

If I read the Synopsis before I read Jaden Smith, I would think this had promise.

I assume he meant Junior's "career". I doubt he was referring to actual death. But if he continues to pollute the big screen, perhaps...

Heh heh heh.Now that's funny.Didn't even bother with Kung Fu Knob head after Son of Smith single handedly destroyed the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still which was on course to be a reasonable remake of a solid gold classic.Come to think of it:The whole Smith clan (including Jada) has dumped all over loadsa classic material.

Sixth Sense and my personal fave Unbreakable are the dogs bollocks, everything else since is one massive embarrassment for MNS. How the mighty have fallen, and I for one get no pleasure from it.
If this is a turning point for him i'll be cheering, but i'm not holding my breath.

no no no, the smith kid certainly didn't help matters but the day the earth stood stil was always going to be the worst film ever made.

crap names are ace. commando wouldn't have been the same if he was called john brown rather than matrix

no, i meant the actual kid should die. not just him but his entire family. then they should come back as zombies just so we can have the satisfaction of killing them again

Okay, I'd get behind that - thanks for clarifying!

Eh.I said reasonable not f**cking Citizen Kane.Hey your the one who thinks original Karate Kid is a classic. It and its retarded sequels are some of the worst films ever made. They deserved the remake.LOL.

@redspider.Are you by chance planning a killing spree at your high school?cough*psycho*.

Kinda miss the old comment system because it weeded out the mentally ill and 'knobheads'.

What is it with all the hating. Can't we all just get along.Get along

Just having some fun, obviously (I hope). Jr isn't a good actor, and it's kind of sad that it seems that Dad is using his name to get his kid work. I'm sure there are many many more talented child/teen actors than Jaden Smith, and Shyamalan could use good actors to help his reputation recover from the nosedive that it seems to be in.

I'm a fan of Shyamalan and I really want him to make great movies.I have enjoyed some of Smith Sr's films, but I've not seen Jaden Smith give a good performance yet. I don't think he has it in him quite frankly.

Sixth sense, great twist. Unbreakable, brilliant until that last scene. But after that... fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice (or 5 times), shame on you.

shame on me, that is (no edit button?)
