Alvin & The Chipmunks box office watch

Another round of the most depressing game of the year - totting up the box office figures from Alvin and the Chipmunks...
Published on Feb 12, 2008
Currently, as it reaches the end of its theatrical run in the States – where it’s made two thirds of its income, with the more lucrative DVD market to come – the film stands at $209m. It’ll eek about another million or two before it goes, and it’s currently – get this – the 74th most successful film ever at the American box office.
74th.
It is, at the time of writing, within touching distance of outgrossing the original Back to the Future and moving up to 73rd. It has now overtaken Terminator 2, Batman Begins, Armageddon, Superman Returns and Ratatouille (the latter perhaps being the most insulting, as it’s a far, far superior family movie that was out only months before Alvin arrived).
If it can somehow pull in another $5m, then it will overtake – get ready to be depressed – 300 and X-men 2 . If there’s another $10m out there for it, then Alvin will beat Saving Private Ryan, Aladdin, King Kong and Mrs Doubtfire. We’re not that arsed about Mrs Doubtfire, though.
If it can get another $400m in the next few weeks, it’ll become the top grossing film at the American box office OF ALL TIME. That’s how close we are to total meltdown here.
Can’t the great American public go and buy their kids a copy of Monster House instead?

The perverse thing is, I now almost want to see it.

Can't they just feck off now? They'd had their fun.
