Hellboy II: The Golden Army trailer

Guillermo del Toro's eagerly awaited Hellboy follow-up is nearly here, and we've been taking a look at the new trailer...

I’ll be frank. There really aren’t that many great trailers doing the rounds at the moment. And so under normal circumstances, I would have been a little worried as to how I could fill this week’s spot. However the latest trailer for Hellboy 2 is doing the rounds, and it’s really rather excellent.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army reunites the old cast with the always-brilliant Guillermo del Toro and from the look of this trailer, the sequel could very well prove to be even better than 2004’s effort. Despite the annoying voiceover, this is one of the best trailers I’ve seen for a long time. The first thing to say is that del Toro’s eye for special effects looks to be as keen as ever, with creatures and mystical worlds galore jumping out from all over the place. The budget looks like it may have been sky high compared to the first outing.

Equally, Hellboy’s, shall we say distinctive, personality punctuates proceedings to great comic effect. His droll overtones are part of what makes him such an endearing character to watch and this trailer suggests that’s all present and correct.
Selma Blair is back and here’s hoping they use her undoubted acting talents to their full. Similarly, it’s great to see Abe Sapien doing his shtick. And recognise that blonde-haired bad boy in the trailer? That’ll be former Bros-bloke Luke Goss, donning the heavy make up and digging out some martial arts moves again, following his stab at it in Blade II.

With a final 20 seconds or so of rip-roaring action and a monster of a payoff, this is a trailer that gets you very, very excited about the film to follow. Studio execs take note. This is how they should be done.
