I still sit every now and then and wonder just how Christopher Nolan got 2005’s Batman Begins so right. That’s no slight against Nolan, nor his terrific cast, it’s just that we’re so used to being disappointed, that on entry to the cinema I was ready to assume the usual position. So to speak.
The problem now, of course, is that my expectations are through the roof, off the back of that ending to Batman Begins. One little playing card can do that. And there’s little coming out of the production that’s put me off. The picture of The Joker on this month’s Empire cover? Genius. The viral marketing campaign going round? Love it. The thought of spending more time in Nolan’s take on Gotham, that’s made me retire my Burton Batman DVDs? It sends shivers down my spine.
This weekend saw more shivers emerge, then, with the revealing of some more images from the production, which we've
Spider-man, once again, is set to get his ass kicked…

I don't like that Batman costume. It looks too... jagged and ridgey. Did it look that way in Begins and I just didn't notice it because Nolan never pulled the camera back during the fight scenes?

That Batman costume is clearly aimed at Mattel et al. Oh dear. Is Schumacker gonna be doing the third one? :( The nipples are coming.

To be fair, will Batman not be wearing his black costume mostly in the dark? I'm really not that interested in superhero films. On the other hand, I really am interested in sinister looking clowns, and Batman Begins was really good. So I'm almost excited by this.

Heath Ledger looks like he's stolen his costume and make-up from Alex Kane, of the band AntiProduct.
Alex looks way cooler though. I think they missed a trick by not casting him.

how come he looks really quite cool on the cover of Empire, and really quite camp on these pics? he reminds me of a cross between Willy Wonka and my drunk uncle

i think it works.. it could have been darker all round but Batman in these new films is not a urban legend type character but rather a urban vigilante with the need for bullt proof armour and gear which suits his surroundings. Gotham isnt the brooding 'gothic' nightmare that was in the original films but rather a run down decaying city and i think this move away from the towering spires, catheral and goth inspired over the top thing is good. We have already seen it in the Crow etc so this change i think will work. This is the same with the Joker, if they had made him all Maryln Manson like it would not work. We have had Jack Nicholson OTT JOker and The Batman cartoon Monster Joker and I see Heath being a mix of Mark Hamill Joker ( from the animated series) and Cyrus the Virus .. a mix of cunning and insanity
