The 10 Worst Blockbusters Of The Last 10 Years

Simon Brew

What's the worst Hollywood blockbuster of the last decade? We count down the list from ten to one...

Published on Jun 3, 2008

There’s nothing really that beats the experience of a huge budget blockbuster movie when it all goes to plan. And yet, especially in recent times it seems, so many times it’s failed to go to plan.

The films in this list thus have several things in common. Firstly, they were each studio tentpole pictures. Secondly, they had lots of money lavished on them. And thirdly, they all took at least $100m at the US box office.

Before anyone starts commenting about Batman & Robin and Speed 2 not being on the list, this collection runs from 1998 to the present, so that pair of otherwise dead-certs don’t feature. But this lot do…

10th
Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle

It was nearly a Matrix film that kicked the list off, but there were enough supporters of Matrix Reloaded to just keep it at arm’s length. Instead, here’s the film that’s surely the reason why people shudder when McG’s name gets attached to a movie. The first Charlie’s Angels was a hoot, a nice balance of over-the-top action and fun. This sequel feels like a technical exercise in just what computers and cameras can do, more of a knob-waving show reel of effects and stunts than anything in the least bit strung together. McG probably enjoyed it a lot, but sadly, he forgot to invite the vast bulk of his audience to the party.

9th
Ocean’s 12

The only one of our list not to be released in the summer, Ocean’s 12 was the quite expensive, high-profile sequel to the deliciously cool remake of Ocean’s 11. With a cast boasting Messrs Clooney, Pitt and Damon, along with Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta Jones, hopes were high even for at least some entertainment. And, to be fair, in the first half, the film sort-of delivered. But from a certain point, it become a self-indulgent smug-fest, packed with in-jokes and tomfoolery that may have seemed fun in the pub after shooting, but was quite horrifyingly bad for those who’d stumped up for a ticket. Ocean’s 13, fortunately, was a healthy, and necessary, improvement.

8th
The Mummy Returns
The golden rule of a blockbuster sequel: never, ever, be tempted to add a small kid to the cast. Blues Brothers 2000 tried it and failed. The Mummy Returns? “My dad is going to kick your arse”, squealed the little brat in this one, and it was downhill from there. A pity, because the first Mummy film was a hoot, and Brendan Fraser is a great blockbuster leading man. But this emptying of a hard drive onto the big screen just never gave us decent time with the characters, and ended with some of the worst special effects work you’ll ever see in such a high budget production. A terrible movie.

7th
The Perfect Storm

George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg united far more successfully with Three Kings, but The Perfect Storm is the absolute prime example of it all being in the trailer. That one special effect, of a boat at the top of a huge wave, was the best bit about the film, but by the time we got to that, most of the audience had long since written the film off as a bad choice. The key problem? It was, simply, dull and boring, and this from director Wolfgang Peterson, who previously gave us Das Boot and In The Line Of Fire (but has since given us, er, Troy, which nearly made this list too).

6th
Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones
It’s easy to knock the Star Wars prequels, and many have made it a chosen sport to do so. Not us, though. That said, the day this writer forked out the best part of a tenner for a night out in front of Attack Of The Clones ranks as one of his very worst movie-viewing decisions. Clones is the one that deals with romance, and you can’t help feeling that if George Lucas tried to woo a real life woman with the words he penned for Episode II, he’d be a very, very single man. The film bursts into life towards the end, but that’s after wading through a lot of self-important tripe, that leaves you begging for the return of a Han Solo character to add some entertainment. Sadly, he never arrives.

5th
Van Helsing

Stephen Sommers isn’t a bad director, but Van Helsing took everything that was bad about The Mummy Returns and just multiplied it a bit. A festival of special effects with pretty much no core whatsoever, not only did Van Helsing waste some fine characters, the film had the feel of being round someone’s house while they were playing Xbox, yet they wouldn’t let you have a go. It all looked very impressive, yet felt desperately remote, and simply not much fun.

4th
Men In Black 2

If the second Men In Black film had been transposed into something like the Police Academy saga, then it would be torn apart for photocopying the script of the last film, making a few changes, and then sitting back and counting the cash. But that didn’t happen. Because while critics hardly warmed to one of the most cynical sequels of recent times, the box office tills were kept extremely busy, leaving open the possibility of – shudder – a third film in what should have been a very promising series.

3rd
Rush Hour 3

It took a long time to bring the project together, and involved huge sums of money going to Messrs Chan, Tucker and Ratner. At least Jackie Chan had the good grace to concede that the film wasn’t much cop, but for the rest of us, this was a disastrously diluted buddy movie. The original, to be fair, was far from a masterpiece, but at least it was half-way to fun. This, however, was a lazy, boring retread, that deserves to kill the franchise stone-dead. What Brett Ratner will do with Beverly Hills Cop 4 is best filed as a bit of a worry.

2nd
Planet Of The Apes

Another one that must have been a good idea at the time. The Planet of the Apes movies first time round have proven to be a good source of income for Fox, so the idea of a ‘reimagining’, with Tim Burton at the helm, should have been enough to kick-start the franchise over again. But it wasn’t to be. Reportedly beset by regular studio interference, the finished product boasts high production values, but little in the way of entertainment for the viewer. And the ending? Let’s just say it’s good that the critical response killed the chance of a sequel stone dead.

1st
Wild Wild West
It’s a tough fight for the top spot, but this disastrous reunion of Will Smith with his Men In Black director Barry Sonnenfeld (who previously gave us the gleeful Addams Family films) is as bad as blockbuster cinema has got in the last decade. The title tune is the best thing about it, as Kenneth Branagh phones in one of the worst Brit-villain performances we’ve ever seen, while even Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek can’t inject much energy into this turgid mess. The giant spider, as described by Kevin Smith in his An Audience With Kevin Smith DVD, is the moment we all should have got the hint and left.

Ha ha, I forgot Wild Wild West. God, what dreadful memories that's brought back. No room for any of the Pirates films then?

If it was a top 15 list, then it's a fair bet that a Pirates film would be in there. But at least even the worse one had *some* fun moments.

Argh, Ven Helsing. Hugh Jackman is great (He's WOLVERINE!) but that was one real turkey of a film. Once was more than enough. After catching it on digital the other day, though, I'm tempted to say Jurassic Park 3 should be on this list. Came out the same year as the Planet of the Apes remake, too. What a "great" summer that was for films...

Once you get past the crappy romance stuff ATOC is a decent SW film & an improvement on TPM. Where was Godzilla, The Avengers, Lost in Space, Armegeddon? I 'm fairly convinced they came out in '98 which was the last 10 yrs. What about Hulk or Daredevil? And where was X-Men: TLS? An absolute stinking piece of mindless garbage if I've ever seen one. I should add that the first Charlie's Angels was bollocks as well.

Terminator 3. Did little more than go over ground already covered by the second film. It was so short of new ideas it had to resort to self parody to raise any interest at all. Great plot twist at the end, though. And leave Attack of the Clones alone. I'm not much of a Star Wars fan, but I thought it was great. Sure, the dialogue is cheesy, but it was realistic and thoughtful in the way it showed Anakin Skywalker gradually being corrupted by The Dark Side, genuinely torn between allegiance to competing factions. I was pleasantly surprised - I expected a money-and-power carrot lazily dangled in front of his nose. Ep II is certainly a lot better than Return of the Jedi, which was basically a two-hour toy commercial.

Write your comment here... Bruce Almighty is also worth adding + Pirattes 3

Attack of the Clones > Phantom Menace. Phantom Menace has clunky dialogue and Jar Jar Binks. AotC has clunky dialogue and great action scenes.

I really like Jurassic Park 3, and wrote about why on this site somewhere before. Likewise, I think T3 still works as a piece of entertainment, I'm one of the 17 people in the world who think Ang Lee's Hulk is outstanding, Daredevil was harmless, The Avengers was strangely compelling rubbish, but Lost In Space perhaps should have squeezed in the list. Armageddon, as I've also written on this site recently, is a great movie... :-)

There is no way in the world that The Phantom Menace is worse than AotC, Ron. No way in the world. The one film I can think of that tops all of those is Dungeons and Dragons... If you want to see a phoned in Brit Villain check out Jeremy Irons in that. And the end...? My god, it made so little sense I actually thought I'd fallen asleep and missed something - I hadn't, but the inside of my eyeballs would've been far more entertaining. Remember, the way they killed Poochie off in Itchy & Scratchy when Homer refused to do the voice over... Yeah, it's like that. Really. I want 2hrs of my life back. Seriously.

Actually, Lost in Space and The Avengers can't make the list because they didn't make over $100m at the US box office. I forgot my own rules for a minute there...

Yes, it's difficult to know why Van Helsing made the list while Daredevil is dubbed 'harmless'. They're both pretty disposable, but neither are really disastrous.

Re: The 10 Worst Blockbusters Of The Last 10 Years
Posted By simonbrew 1 June 3, 2008 02:55:13 PM

Daredevil was still reasonably entertaining. Van Helsing was thuddingly dull.

I agree Simon. I quite like Daredevil, despite Ben Affleck's best efforts to make me want to hate it. Van Helsing on the other hand is truly shit.

I quite liked Van Helsing. Admittedly, its nothing special and most people don't like it but although it does look quite cartoony with all that CGI, it does have lots of monsters in it & I do like monsters + Hugh Jackman gives a much better performance than Ben Affleck in Daredevil. Still, each to their own & all that sort of thing

I'm with Ron, Phantom Menace is mostly ruined by having an annoying little shit running round not being Darth Vader, whereas AOTC is pretty solid and works so much better when watched back to back with ROTS, I'll pretty much always watch them as a pair now, which Phantom I'll just watch the Darth Maul fight and skip most of the rest... Aww poor Daredevil getting bashed again. Damn. Mind you, I even enjoyed Wicky Wah Wah...

I have to back Sarah up the Van Helsing thing. I rather liked it. As for Daredevil, how can you like anything with Ben Affleck as the lead? He's a total ringpiece. And while you pretend to dislike Wild Wild West, Simon, everyone in the office knows you're a secret fan... Wicky wicky wah indeed.

As bad as Planet of The Apes was (I'm a big fan of the originals though), it was MUCH nearer to the book than the original film ever was. For once the lesser adaptation was the better.

I think while most of the world was hit by an anti-Affleck meteor, I was getting drunk in the pub and when I came out everyone in the world had turned against the chubby one from fashionable retail. Plus you should remember that Affleck is blind is Daredevil and my eyesight is a bit bum, so I feel sorry for him. Also I've just remembered that he was deafened after having Joey Lauren Adams squeal at him for an hour and a half, so now you're picking on someone who's deaf and blind, not so clever now is it?

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Matrix Revolutions. It's significantly worse than the previous film, which at least had a few decent fight scenes in; moreover, it genuinely made me think I'd prefer life as a human duracell than as an extra in a cheap One Million Years B.C. remake. While nobody could genuinely have had much in the way of expectations from Wild Wild West of the Pirates of the Carribbean films, the half-bakedness of the Matrix sequels was almost inconceivable after the brilliance of the first one. I've sat through a vast number of terrible films and aside from Dude Where's My Car (which at least didn't take itself seriously), it's the only one where I've totally failed to will the suspension of disbelief.

I think among all this debate, we're all agreed on one thing. As toneee said, Ben Affleck is a ringpiece.

I think missing Pirates 3 out was a mistake, cos I reckon it deserves a shout for being completely, utterly, depressingly disappointing. Although the second wasn't much cop, Pirates 1 was action-packed, funny and had good performances from all involved (excluding Orlando Bloom, who I hate, and who seems to act with his eyebrows more than any other part of his body, including his brain). The premise for Pirates 3 was confusing, the action scenes boring, and the script laughable (wedding in the middle of a whirlpool anyone?). The only thing I remotely enjoyed about it was the fact that it had Keira Knightley in. All in all though, I think it was possibly the most disappointing film I saw last year, and that's including Spiderman 3, which I also thought was gash.

I don't actually mind The Affleck. He ain't a great actor, but The Sum Of All Fears was really good, Daredevil was fine, and, er, I fairly quickly run out of examples. Gone, Baby, Gone - while not geeky at all - is an outstanding film too. For the record, the title song of 'Wild Wild West' is shit-but-irresistable. The film is shit-and-shit.

Re: The 10 Worst Blockbusters Of The Last 10 Years
Posted By simonbrew 1 June 4, 2008 05:04:37 PM

Plus: I ain't pitching a tent here that The Phantom Menace is much cop, but it's a damn site better, and takes itself a lot less seriously, than the shambles of Clones.

The Affleck isn't bad - and apart from the cringe worthy bit in the park in Daredevil it isn't a bad movie. He also wasn't that bad in Hollywoodland where he played a washed out actor... which really is not that much of a stretch but its still not a bad film.

Thunderbirds. Not a blockbuster as such-but boy,is this a spectacular lesson in how to kill off a potentially Star Wars/Indy/Bond sized franchise before its even got started. What an abomination of a movie, nothing to recommend it.Its a sad state of affairs when the best thing about a movie is that the theme song is by Busted!!!Shoot Jonathon Frakes. And not with a camera....
