Transformers 2 details announced

Simon Brew

Work on one of the biggest blockbusters of next summer is already well underway, and more details of Transformers 2 have emerged...

Published on May 28, 2008

Production is now underway on the sequel to Transformers, which was the only non-sequel of last summer to really hit big. The original took over $300m at the US box office alone, and unsurprisingly, this has led to the fast-tracking of instalment two, which hits cinema screens on 26th June 2009.

So here’s what we know. Michael Bay is back behind the camera for the film, and of the cast, returnees include Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamel. We also know that Rainn Wilson (Dwight from the US version of The Office) will be popping up in a small cameo role, and that Jonah Hill (the star of Superbad) is – contrary to some reports – not on the cast list, having turned a role down.

We also know that Ehren Kruger (Scream 3) has written the screenplay, from a story by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and that the Decepticons will be bolstered by the addition of Ravage and Soundwave to their ranks.

Further casting announcements are expecting over the next couple of weeks as filming ramps up, and even as you read this, some mighty impressive computer is no doubt working its innards out on the effects.

The note of caution is surely that two years between mammoth blockbusters isn’t very long at all, even if a lot of the pathfinding on the effects work was done with the first movie. But with just over a year to get the finished film to our screens, the cast and crew of Transformers 2 had, simply, better get a crack on…

How will Soundwave, a cassette player, work in the modern world? Will he be an IPod? How about Ravage?

Lord knows how long they took over the first one, and that turned out to be a humongous pile of poo... I couldn't care less about this sequel.
