Spiderman 4: no more Tobey Maguire?

Simon Brew

Could the next chapter in the Spider-man franchise have changed in front of as well as behind the camera?

Published on May 27, 2008

Recently, we reported that Sony was looking to filming the fourth and fifth instalments in the hyper-expensive Spider-man series back to back, which would help manage the costs a little, and also combat the three-year gap between the films. But it also has another problem: Spider-man 3 showed the first blips in the Spidey cinematic juggernaut, with a fairly frosty critical reception, and a box office haul that fell beneath that of Spider-man 2.

So when approaching Spider-man 4, a few interesting challenges have been posed. Director Sam Raimi, for instance, has completed his contract on the franchise, and while there’s the possibility that he could be tempted back to  the series that has eaten up nearly a decade of his working life, he’s recent been linked with reviving the Jack Ryan saga for Paramount, and the murmurings are that he’s not keen to climb back into the Spidey chair. The likelihood is that after the third film mashed together too many villains with not a great deal of success, Sony is keen to pursue other options anyway.

It’s not just Raimi whose time may be up on the series, though. Tobey Maguire was contracted to do three films as the webslinger, and while it’s still unclear as to whether he’d want to play the character again, it seems that Sony may be considering a ‘reboot’ of sorts by recasting the title role. That would also, of course, more than likely leave Kirsten Dunst looking for a fresh gig, too. You can see people weeping over that.

Of course, none of this has come anywhere close to being confirmed, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation from kicking off. Current names being kicked around the message boards are Michael Angarano (Will & Grace) and Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), although we wonder if Jake Gyllenhaal is the man they should plump for…

Expect more news soon, but don't expect another Spider-man film until at least 2010...

There are already names being tossed around - such as Patrick Fugit (from Almost Famous) and Micheal Angarano (from the new film Forbidden Kingdom). Personally I dont mind either as I didnt really like Maguire in Spiderman so any replacement could be a good thing

In fairness, you could replace him with Jake Gyllenhaal or Topher Grace and I wouldn't even notice.

I think if you can replace the actors, it won't be spiderman 4, it will be an entirely seperate thing. If they were to do S4 then it would need to have the following: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Bruce Campbell. Those three people made the movies work. And since Raimi triumphed with the first 2 (especially 2) I think he should have one last go. Tie everything up. And if they are thinking about changing everything then I say can it.

I can do without Tobey or Kristen, but if they dont have Bruce "EVIL DEAD" Campbell I am not watching it.

Hello I’m Adnan Ronie. I’m a great spidy-lover & Spiderman is my favorite movie. Spiderman 1, 2, & 3 were really one of the greatest movies. I like it because it is Action, Romantic, Thriller, Comedy and Sci-Fi. I’d very much like to see Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in next Spider-Man movie as he is perfect for this and proved so in first 3 films. I don’t want replacement of Tobey Maguire and also Kirsten Dunst for Mary Jane Watson. Has everybody forgotten James Franco as Harry Osborn? I thanked him very much for acting in Spiderman movies. He was really perfect in supporting role as he did. He may not come in next Spiderman movies because it showed that he (Harry Osborn) died in Spiderman 3 movies. We will miss him. I think it will be good if Venom come back again in Spiderman 5 or 6, not in Spiderman 4. I’m saying that for a gap after Spiderman 3. As because Venom has came in Spiderman 3, he should come back in 5th or 6th installment rather than 4th film, so that everyone can say that “Venom is back!”. Another thing, in Spiderman 3 Venom has been showed in a very short time that is when Eddie Brock is converted into Venom and the duration of Venom is too short. So I wanted to see only Venom as only one villain and want to see him for full time duration in next Spiderman. I hope it will be great. I expecting to come more Spiderman movies come next times and it will be best film and place in top position in Hollywood. I want Tobey, Kirsten, Raimi, and others to come back to make it a worth movies. So, Please bring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, director Sam Raimi and all characters who acted in previous Spiderman movies. I’m waiting for next Spiderman movies…
