Halo movie still happening?

Simon Brew

As Microsoft prepares to launch Halo: Reach on Xbox 360, could the Halo movie be happening anytime soon?

Published on Sep 7, 2010

If all had gone to plan, we'd already have seen the first Halo movie on the big screen. Peter Jackson would have produced it, Neill Blomkamp would have directed it, and no doubt we'd be talking about a sequel right about now.

As it happened, as the budget on the project soared, the plug was pulled, and Jackson and Blomkamp went and applied their efforts to District 9 instead. Few could really have argued with the end result of all of that.

However, as Microsoft prepares to roll out Halo: Reach on Xbox 360, talk has surfaced once more about bringing the franchise to the big - and as it turns out, the small - screen as well.

Talking to Variety, Frank O'Connor, the Franchise Development Director (isn't that a soul-destroying job title?) responsible for Halo, had the following to say:

"We're still interested in making an excellent 'Halo' movie. We've created an awful lot of documentation and materials to support a feature film. We have a good idea of what kind of story we want to tell, but won't move on it until there's a great reason to do it. We're in no particular hurry."

We'd imagine that part of the reason that he's in no hurry is that Halo will be a mightily expensive movie, and given the critical and commercial response to videogame films thus far, it's fair to say that the film marks a mighty risk (although Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time did bring in over $300m at the worldwide box office in the summer just gone). We'd also suspect that the response to the forthcoming Halo: Reach may have something to do with the decision.

Our guess? It's a long time before you'll see a Halo movie. The TV show might just be a better bet.

If don't hurry up, nobody's going to know, or care, who Master Chief is!

I'd say they missed the boat already... ODST & Halo Wars weren't great and I think the brand is definately watered down to the effect that the public interest is fading quickly. Perhaps Reach will indeed manage to resuscitate the brand enough to warrant a movie, but I doubt it.

ODST was an expansion of Halo 3, it wasnt meant to be a standalone game. It was a rush job, hence the absence of any matchmaking in Firefight mode. Even then, i think it was one of the better games of last year (and there were a lot of good games). I think 3.7 million beta testers for Reach show that the public interest is not fading quickly, quite the opposite. In 2009, Halo 3 was THE most played game on xbox live (i couldnt find figures for this year but know its pretty much top 2 week in week out). Halo Wars was again a marketing cash-in, a poor mans Command and Conquer that had nothing to do with Bungie - although I am currently playing it in preparation for Reach and have to say I'm liking the story. You're personal opinion of an expansion pack and a spin-off to a different genre do not mean the brand is 'watered down to the effect that the public interest is fading quickly'. And Kial, i will ALWAYS know and care who Chief is! I've been playing Halo hours a week for almost 9 years, he means more to me than Sonic and Mario put together.

Gudge, you missed Kail's point. You're obviously at least a semi-hardcore gamer, so the chances of you or someone of our ilk not knowing who Master Chief is are pretty slim. Can you really say that's true about the general public at this moment in time?

easy Geordie. The response to Kail was tongue in cheek, but i can honestly say people that played the games will always remember, the same as mario or sonic. The comments before that were serious though, its not in decline at all. When a beta gets almost 4 million users, its an in demand product.

also, people who dont play the games dont know the name 'Master Chief', but they do know the name Halo and what the protagonist looks like. A film would bring this chacter to the masses, especially one set in the vast Halo universe. Hell, the Halo film doesnt even need Chief in it. ODST and Halo Wars had nothing to do with the Chief.
