Alien prequels: Ridley Scott offers more hints, Gemma Arterton in talks to star?

Ridley Scott discusses his plans for his Alien prequels, and Gemma Arterton hints that she may be in line to take a leading role…

Published on Sep 7, 2010

Exploding forth like a facehugger from a disturbed egg, the past couple of days has seen an influx of rumours and news about Ridley Scott's Alien prequel, scheduled to begin shooting next year.

First, the legendary director spoke to the Independent about his intentions for his return to the Alien franchise which, the article says, will be a two-part prequel shot in 3D, and will explore the murky history of the titular creatures.

"The film will be really tough, really nasty," Scott said. "It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"

As Scott already divulged earlier this year, the prequels will be set in 2085, 30 years before Ripley and her crew aboard the Nostromo first discovered the planet LV-426. This means, of course, that the prequels almost certainly won't have a role for Sigourney Weaver, though, if the news we've read courtesy of the Sunday Times is true, Scott already has another actress in mind to star in the movies.

In an interview timed to coincide with the release of Stephen Frears' upcoming Tamara Drewe, its star, Gemma Arterton, revealed that she'd been in talks with Scott about the possibility of starring in the Alien prequels.

While making the protagonist a female in the prequels is a logical one (the franchise's capable heroine provides the perfect counterpoint to Giger's ferocious xenomorph, after all), whoever ultimately lands the role will inevitably have their performance compared to Weaver's iconic turn as the fiercely capable Ripley.

We don't doubt Arterton's acting talent for a moment, but Weaver's performance will be a tough one to follow.

More news on the Alien prequels as we get it.

Just get it right Ridley, we don't want a Lucas effort here.

If there's two words to put me off watching a film, its "Gemma Arterton". She was terrible in Quantum!

Gods and engineers? What the fuck are you talking about, Ridley?! Please, just stop. I don't mind Gemma Arterton at all, but I do mind the way that these films have to be pitched to the audience simply because there's no reason for them to be made.

You doubt Ms Arterton is up to the task? Then watch The Disappearance of Alice Creed. A fine film and Arterton is very good in it. And she doesn't just rely on her looks either. I was impressed.

She's certainly going up in the world (well, kind of). Bond to Prince of Persia to (reportedly) Alien inside 3 years. I'd bloody love to have that kind of record on my CV. As to the film, take into account that this is Ridley Scott, not his brother (though granted, Top Gun's still class). I quite like the idea.

The "legendary director" is going to be yet another idiot to ruin a perfectly good old movie.

So, Lucas thinks he's the only one who can cock up a great film with a terrible prequel? Well step aside, Ridley Scott's here to show you how it's done.

"So, Lucas thinks he's the only one who can cock up a great film with a terrible prequel? Well step aside, Ridley Scott's here to show you how it's done." You've seen it then? If you could lend me the key to your time machine, I'd be grateful. And I quite like the 'gods and engineers' angle. Including other concepts other than 'people run from creatures who kill them off one at a time until few survivors defeat them' is a good thing. Although I hope for some classic alien monster action too. And I'm sure he didn't mean 'gods' in the literal sense.

I just followed this link:http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=69595, and apparently there's been an update: "MTV spoke to Arterton's publicist who says there's no truth to this report."

The quotes from Ridley in the Independent article are actually taken from an interview in April

I trust Ridley. He will bring a new angle to this. Saying it will be 'nasty' has piqued my interest.
