Is Darren Aronofsky set to direct Wolverine 2?

Ryan Lambie

With weird drama/thriller Black Swan on the way, is it possible that director Darren Aronofsky’s next movie will be a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

Published on Aug 31, 2010

As we may have already said more than once here on Den Of Geek, Darren Aronofsky's films, regardless of subject matter or genre, are seldom less than fascinating.

From his stunning debut feature, Pi, to the forthcoming, creepy looking Black Swan starring Natalie Portman, every project he's involved with is individual and excellently crafted. Even his sprawling, genuinely odd misfire, The Fountain, had its moments of visual brilliance.

The action genre is one that Aronofsky has yet to tackle but, if the rumours heading in from the US have any basis in reality, that may soon change. According to First Showing and Deadline, Aranofsky is, along with David Slade, one of the names in the running to direct the follow-up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Wolverine himself (Hugh Jackman, to you and me) has been in talks with both directors, though at this point it looks more likely that Slade, with his recent hit Twilight: Eclipse, will get the directorial gig.

The notion of Aronofsky directing an effects action movie like Wolverine 2 is an exciting one, though, and we'd be fascinated to see what he would do with one of X-Men's most recognisable characters. More on this as it comes in.

[fountainSPOILER]The Fountain was only a misfire for those who failed to grasp that 1500 and 2500 were a metaphor for his learning to cope with his loss and his realisation that life is already eternal since we're all part of the same ecosystem.. him drinking the sap only sped up the process.[/SPOILER]

Ditto to bytat, The Fountain is so amazing, but apparently people don't get it.. Even if you don't get it, you can't say it didn't look beautful, sound beautiful and featured some amazing acting!

Robocop = MGM = failed/failing studio (billions of dollars in debt and trying to find a buyer). Whenever MGM does get a buyer, their first priority are going to be getting a new James Bond movie and the Hobbit movies off the ground. Don't expect to see Robocop for a long, long time (and not Aronofsky). And agreed, if you didn't get The Fountain you really weren't looking past the surface level.

Thank you bytat, steggy, and TRex...glad to see I'm not the only one who would rush to the defense of The Fountain. I thought it was a brilliant movie, and beautiful in a visual and emotional sense. Still need to see The Wrestler

The Fountain is such a beautiful movie, with seemingly complex but yet so simple premise. I absolutely love it. And the soundtrack from Clint Mansell if probably the best OST out there.
