Len Wiseman signs up to direct Total Recall

Simon Brew

The long-rumoured new take on Total Recall has been greenlit, and Len Wiseman will be calling the shots…

Published on Jul 30, 2010

It's been chattered about in Hollywood for a while, but the planned new movie take on Total Recall is now formally going ahead. Based once more on the Philip K Dick story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, the first Total Recall gave Arnie one of his best roles and movies of the 1990s, helped by having director Paul Verhoeven behind the camera.

This time? Underworld and Die Hard 4.0 director Len Wiseman has signed up to direct. It's being described as a "computerized animation", which we take to mean computer effects rather than getting DreamWorks Animation on the case.

And Wiseman is excited. He said of the project, "I've always been fascinated with Philip K. Dick's short story, and I'm excited at that prospect of diving even deeper into the type of world it evokes and the questions it asks. I love that the most crucial mystery our character is trying to solve is the one of his own soul."

The film is to be produced by Neil H Moritz, with his production company - the ironically named Original Film - developing the movie. No timescales have thus far been announced, but we'll bring them your way when we get them.

Why, god, why do they insist on remaking classic movies? Even if it's done well it doesn't NEED to be remade, or reimagined or whatever. Just come up with some new ideas. >,<

this is f$£king bull sh%t i cannot believe there remaking this what a travesty i swear out of all the recent re-makes this pi$$es me off the most why can't they just leave well enough alone, one of my favourite films of all time and they will no doubt ruin it by making it mediocre at best , it's not like it hasn't even aged well.... i swear if they do big trouble in little china i am going to freak out.

"Hey man, I've got five kids to feed!" If they threaten to remake Big Trouble in Little China, I will personally put a stop to it!

Anybody remember the remake of The Fog? Oh, LOL!!! DuncanMonkey, but here's a better one. "You make me wish I had 3 hands"

I'll be honest: a "remake" of this movie, albeit based more on the original source, will be a discredit to it. Not to totally insult Philip K. Dick fans but the story that Total Recall is based on isn't nearly as good or enjoyable as the film (IMHO). It's sorta lack-luster in a way; trippy in that P.K. Dick style, but not as nearly as *fun!*

Hahaha! We should start a campaign - "No three breasted hooker, no ticket sale!"

If this film includes someone removing a large homing device from their body, through a nostril... it may have a shot at being decent.

OH FFS NO PLEASE.... This is one of my fave Films - they're gonna f*ck it up for sure. Can't they just employ some Writers to think up new ideas? BTW - @deathmachine808, it's "DAMM YOU BENNY...." although Arnie does say SCREW YOU to him later on in the film when he rams the drill thru the digger into Benny!!

Total classic for me, its a good action film full of great one liners, unintentionally hilarious too. The scene where Arnie disguises himself as a woman and the mask thing malfunctions is funny "2 weeks bleah". "See you at the party Richter"

There so many classic Arnie-isms in this movie. I can't believe that someone wants to mess with 90's perfection.

I find it hilarious that people get their knickers in a twist when a remake is greenlit. When the film comes, don't buy a cinema ticket to watch it and dust off your original Total Recall DVD instead.

The original is one of the great head-f***s of all time - but surely everyone knows the twists by now?

Will it be a remake of the original film though? Or another adaptation of the book? I haven't read the book but I imagine Total Recall was quite different from it. I agree that the film Total Recall should not be remade, great as it is, but an adaptation of the original story might not be a bad thing.

@MarvMarble - Agreed

The problem is they might want to sell it as a "Total Recall remake" and not a "Film based upon Philip K. Dick"

Great. Instead of a classic violent, profane, 3 titty Arnold movie we're going to get a desaturated, shakey-cam PG-13 "Bourne" ripoff starring Sam Worthington who will kill zero people. Hope you enjoy the ride.

@pete3206 You have surely missed the point. Aside from the fact that all this 'product' is unnecessary and nearly ALWAYS mediocre at best, it has become a default revenue stream for the vertically integrated corporate system. Franchise movies have predetermined market value which is a much better indicator of future profit for the bean counters. The point is that this bullshit is sucking up the dollars that could be spent on something original - perhaps classic.

No Midget or three titted hookers and whats the point in even calling it a re-make, it won't be the same. There going to ruin it i want to go stand somewere with a placard. If they cast Megan fox in it then thats it i'm just never going to the cinema again out of protest her and adrien brody.

what a dumb idea. why would you remake a movie that was already perfect? "you got a lot of nerve showing your face around here..." "look who's talking" Len should try something original
