Jan De Bont confirmed for Point Break 2

The sequel to the 90s surfer action flick has been confirmed - and the choice of the director may not be a wise one...

It’s been a long time coming, but a sequel to Kathryn Bigelow’s surfing action flick, Point Break, is finally heading to our screens. The original starred Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, and it seems so far that neither of them will be returning for the follow up, which is still a couple of years away, by the looks of things. But new casting has not yet been mentioned.

The film takes place 20 years after the first, and the original screenwriter – W Peter Iliff – is returning to pen the second.

The surprise choice to direct the film is Jan De Bont, a man who hasn’t made a good film since Speed in 1996 (or Twister, if you want to be really generous). Since then, De Bont’s output has covered the terrible Speed 2, the terrible The Haunting and the terrible Tomb Raider 2. He’s currently shooting Stopping Power, a John Cusack movie due for release next year. We’re sure it’ll be good.

From there, he picks up cameras once more and heads off to Point Break work. Given the man’s track record when it comes to sequels and remakes, we’ll reserve judgement on this one…
