Karl Urban lined up to play Judge Dredd?

Simon Brew

Could Karl Urban’s chin be about to get a fresh injection of fame? Rumours suggest that he is the man to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen….

Published on Jul 22, 2010

It's due to be heading into production later this year, and now the planned cinematic reboot of Judge Dredd may just have found its leading man.

According to rumours and word uncovered at Bleeding Cool, Karl Urban - who so memorably inhabited the role of McCoy in JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot - is the man set to pull on the helmet. Furthermore, unlike the Sylvester Stallone-Danny Cannon movie of the mid 90s, that helmet will stay firmly on his head.

The new film is being directed by Pete Travis, the man behind Vantage Point. And the script has been written by Alex Garland.

The film is currently looking set for release in 2012, and it will, as you might already know, be in 3D.

Here's the full story over at Bleeding Cool.

That chin's going to need some bulking up then

Bob Geldof's chin was always a good fit in my book. Very Mike McMahon or Brian Bolland esque

AGree with posters above, chin is just not strong enough. You need someone like Ron Perlman to do this right

Not the worst choice but Perlman would be perfect for Dredd.

Have to agree with Perlman he's got the right voice as well, plus he's never had a problem hiding his face behind masses of makeup so just a helmet would be like taking time off for him

Don't get too fixated on the chin. Remember that Ezquerra's original Dredd didn't have the huge jutting chin that later artists drew. Still, I agree Ron Perlman would be perfect.

You could motion-capture the chin.

Clint Eastwood is still acting, and Dredd himself is roughly Eastwood's age. I would pay to see that film. For that matter Robert Duvall would probably be excellent as well. I'm not sure of the logic of casting someone relatively young as Dredd; he's always been an kind of ultimate fuddy-duddy spoilsport, they would need someone with gravitas who can do the "Tommy Lee Jones implied facepalm" with just his chin.
