Batman 3: The Riddler named as villain?

Simon Brew

It looks like Batman will be fighting The Riddler in Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to The Dark Knight – and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is being strongly linked with the role…

Published on Jul 21, 2010

It's been heavily speculated for the past couple of months that Christopher Nolan's return to Gotham City for a third time would see the Dark Knight fighting The Riddler. And thanks to a bit of work over at FirstShowing, it now seems much more likely that that's the case.

Nolan's Batman 3 (as it's becoming known) is set to shoot early next year, and as is the case with all of the director's movies, he's been keeping things close to his chest. That hasn't stopped rampant speculation regarding who the villain is, but now a source has told FirstShowing that, in this case, the collective might of the Internet might have called this one correctly.

The site's source has reportedly got hold of a studio casting grid that specifically lists The Riddler in the character list for Batman 3. Furthermore, the site notes that there's a name next to that of the character: Mr Joseph Gordon-Levitt, currently being seen in Nolan's Inception.

That's not to say that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on the dotted line, of course, although his status on the casting grid is listed as "interested". That's a very different beast to ‘signed on the dotted line and committed much of the next year of his life to the role'.

The grid apparently lists the age range for the character as 35-45, too, which doesn't fit Gordon-Levitt particularly, given that the actor is currently 29. But we suspect that there might be some flexibility there.

This is still all yet to be confirmed, and could, of course, change at any time. But it's the first step towards substantive confirmation that The Riddler is the man that Bruce Wayne needs to be worried about in July 2012.

Also, we'd wager that Nolan will put a second, supporting villain in there too. But again, that's just speculation on our part.

Here's the story at FirstShowing.

Could be interesting -- if they entirely avoid the Jim Carrey style leaping around and awful jokes, which Nolan surely must do, given his track record. Would also like to see Catwoman in this one, seeing as how there's basically no female characters left in the series!

Yeah, Gordon-Levitt is just not talented enough of an actor to bridge that 6-year, actual-to-ficticious age gap. /:(

To me the Riddler always seemed like Joker Lite. I hope Nolan makes him significantly different. I'd like to see him portrayed as a mysterious Zodiac-style serial killer. Get some proper detective work for Batman!

I hope to see the Riddler as a serial killer leaving clues and traps hopefully obsessed with Batman's secret identity or Bruce Wayne. And I really hope Black Mask will become a foe for Bruce Wayne both in crime and in business. I'd like to see the worlds of Bruce Wayne and Batman collide. It's said that this third Batman movie would be the last, the ending of the story, so I'm guessing it will be like that. Bruce Wayne vs Batman. Also, I hope to see Batman as the villain for the first part of the movie, the cops chasing him as he tries to take down mafia bosses and organized crime and Gordon forced to give the order whilst secretly helping. This could be awesome. Gordon-Levitt as Riddler? Maybe if done right, but I doubt it. Jackie Earle Haley might be better, but that might be too dark.

Well it isn't a surprise that Nolan would pick a puzzle ridden baddie as he likes that sort of thing himself. And I suspected he may use Levett - but I thought he may grab him to do a Joker cameo as he looks a bit like the Ledger! but i'll go with him as the Riddler he's a solid actor.

Nolan's already said there'll be no Joker in Batman 3. I'd be up for Gordon-Levitt in the role, Nolan's proved that he has an eye for casting and Gordon-Levitt doesn't have a lot of star baggage and hasn't been type cast as a particular character (Tommy Solomon from 3rd rock from the sun being the only one of his that springs to mind)

Does anyone know if there's been a modern re-imagining of the Riddler worth reading? You know, in the "Killing Joke" sort of mode?

I'd would be really happy if Gordon Levitt got the role. Not only because he'd be great in it but also because he has really gotten to where he is right now by working his ass off and choosing to be a part of good movies.

The Riddler - how predictable. I only wish Nolan would use the Ventriloquist, he's one of the most fascinating Batman villains in the whole of Gotham. Nolan used Ra's and Scarecrow in BEGINS, which are not obvious choices and they worked great. No to Catwoman, no to Riddler.

Wow ! Awesome ! Dark Knight Returns ! The thing with these casting rumors does anybody else remember way back in the day, people talking about the reason why Katie Holmes didn't return to her role in second movie was really because she was told that she was going to be Catwoman in third movie and she didn't want to do that ?!? That's true then what we're going have in third movie, is Batman a wanted fugitive with two supervillians, (Catwoman and Riddler )teaming up both them knowing who he is and threatening to expose him to authorites, Batman not realising that one of them ( Catwoman ) is really his long dead ex-girlfriend that he thought had been killed in explosion by Joker ?!? It was also said the reason why Joker wasn't killed off in second movie was because they were planning on the Catwoman killing him off in first minute of the third movie ? But hey if it ain't true, then cool it's Batman. Whatever they choose to do, dude, it better not suck ...

@RebelDog : It definetly would be cool to see te ventriloquist get used, I don't think he could carry a whole movie without it seeming amusing to the general public. He was used very well in the fan film "City of Scars" if you haven't seen it there's a great movie about a ventriloquist who loses it called "Magic" with Anthony Hopkins. I always felt that'd be a good way to work the ventriloquist.

I actually would support the inclusion of a villain like Black mask or the Ventriloquest(I can imagin Scarfaces voice even now)as both are traditional mob bosses in one sense and "freaks" in another. However a villain has to have a degree of instant recognition with non comic book geeks. So the Riddler makes sense. I actually like the idea which has been explored in the comics of him being a private detective (though only in the comics after he has reformed temporarily)or as the manipulative mastermind he is in the HUSH saga. Where after all he is the real power behind the plot against Batman not the character who gives his name to story .
