Alien Anthology Blu-ray confirmed and detailed

Ryan Lambie

The official announcement of the Alien movies on Blu-ray arrives, with full details of the extra features right here...

Published on Jul 15, 2010

Stop everything! Fox has just formally announced the six disc Alien Anthology, a vast collection which includes two versions of all four Alien features (Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection), and huge quantities of previously unseen extras, ranging from an unreleased version of Wreckage And Rage: The Making Of Alien 3 to pre-production test footage.

Tying the 60 hours’ worth of features together is a MU-TH-UR mode, which provides an index to all the content spread over the discs. And for those with the extra cash, the collection also comes in a limited edition, which also comes with The Guardian, a glowing egg statue.

60 hours?! And I thought the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions were extensive!

Glad to see they've dropped the word 'quadrilogy', but is there anywhere that details what's new to this set?

I'll probably get this (huge Aliens fan), but I'll wait for 1) reviews of the HD transfer quality (just look what Fox did to the recent Predator re-release!)and 2) a comparison of exactly what's new to this set as opposed to the Quadrilology.

Got to agree with Interference Quadrilogy has always sounded ridiculous especially as Tetralogy is the correct term. It's a good year for BR Re-issues with this and Back to the Future coming soon. Time to get my pre-order in for my 4th dip on the series.

Anyone got any idea which audio mixing technologies are being used on this release?

PeaJay - was talking about this earlier on another forum, someone said exactly the same as you. I would hope that James Cameron has wouldnt let a shoddy transfer get released, seeing how meticulous he is over his work - he's also got enough clout with Fox to make his wishes stick as well. (same goes for Scott...dont know about David Fincher in this case mind... ;) )

I notice it says "Restored Workprint Version" for the second version of Alien3. Does this mean Have Fox stumped up the cash and actually fixed up the Workprint with restored dialogue and sound, that were sadly missing from the DVD release? That would definitely be worth me finally getting a BR player...

TJN - more & more I find that I just want the best possible quality version of the film and care less and less about the extras. (Must be getting old...) Fingers crossed this set can deliver on both fronts.

PJ - if the studio made as much effort with every BR release as they did with say the 2001 and The Thing discs we'd have nothing to complain about on either front. (and tbh, I like rewatching the films I like with the commentaries on, and some discs like the Halloween BR and the Silent Running US dvd release have superb documentaries on them) What I do object to however, is things like the first BR release of 'Predator' where tbh, I couldnt see a huge difference in picture quality at all.

How many times have I bought Alien to watch? Let's count - the original cropped 4:3 video, the original WS release, the remastered WS release, the Trilogy box set release (in the facehugger box), then the DVDs - the Legacy boxset version and the Quadrilogy boxset version and now the BluRay Anthology boxset version - eeek! Good job I like the movie then! ;-)

I'm happy with my Alien Quadrilogy box-set for now. Although I am curious about the Alien 3 restored work-print, what with that being my favourite version of the film.

@Huffy The dialogue has been rerecorded recently by the original actors, and a new sound mix has been created. The set also has isolated music scores for the four films.

@cbridgen Thanks for that, definitely getting it once I've saved up for my BR player...
