Avatar DVD and Blu-ray release date confirmed

Simon Brew

James Cameron’s Avatar will be arriving on disc on April 26th. Here are the details…

Published on Mar 16, 2010

20th Century Fox has just formally announced the DVD and Blu-ray release of Avatar, for 26th April in the UK (and we’re guessing 27th April, or thereabouts, in the US).

The press announcement doesn’t go into details about what extra features we can expect, although we do know that a fuller special edition is planned for November of this year. It’s probably safe to assume that this is the features-light release we’re getting in April.

It seems too that UK buyers will be getting a bit extra with the release. But we’ll hand things over to the official press announcement to explain more…

“The must-own AVATAR Blu-ray release provides the ultimate high definition experience for home viewing audiences.  Recognized for its optimum picture and sound, the film’s masterful cinematography, art direction and visual effects lends itself to awe-inspiring clarity when viewed on Blu-ray Disc.

The UK is exclusively releasing a Limited Edition Blu-ray available for pre-order only by online retailers containing 4 lenticular art cards and a ‘Survival Guide’ book.

Since its global theatrical release last December, AVATAR continues to make motion picture history.  The Golden Globe and Oscar winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.6 billion in worldwide box office, with £89.4 million from the UK box office to date.  Director James Cameron takes audiences to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.

Written by Cameron and produced with his long-time collaborator Jon Landau, AVATAR stars Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver; as well as Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi and Joel David Moore".

The usual marketing blurb, then. We'd expect fuller details on the contents of the disc to be following shortly, though.

Can't say I'll be rushing to pre-order my copy as I found the film to be one of the most turgid, sterile and over-hyped cinematic experiences in many a year ... okay, so the FX were impressive but Cameron proceeded to take a leaf out of a certain Mr. Lucas' book and turn in a film that was all style and no substance ... overlong, poorly scripted and lacking any element of surprise I found the whole affair to be rather boring and fail to see quite what all the fuss is about ... in a year that saw the awesome 'Moon' eclipsed by a lame ass remake of Pocahontas featuring a bunch of oversized Smurfs to hear the words 'the future of cinema' is to bring on nausea' vomiting and anxiety as to quite what the future holds ... for anyone yet to 'experience' Cameron's vision I really can't urge you enough to save you time and money and, should intelligent, thought-provoking sci-fi be the order of the day to rush out and rent Duncan Jones' masterpiece instead ...

Also this is a barebones release. Cameron has stated a feature rich edition will be released in time for Xmas!

Wow...so much anger about this film?! I 've seen Moon and Avatar and their BOTH good movies in their own way. I've been watching (and reading) scifi since the 70's (Silent Running was the first SF film I saw in theatres), and I would be hard pressed to name ANY film that was Perfect. However, EVERY film was promoted as The best, most amazing, ground breaking, blah, blah, blah etc. So if you buy into that shit than your going to get worked up when you find that the film has'nt been tailored to your taste i guess. You should take what good you can from these movies. I recognize that Avatars plot was basic. maybe if the plot was to complex, people would have found the movie less accessable (and it would'nt have made 2.6B) Some of the visuals were Staggering. The storyline for Moon was well written and very well acted. The visuals were basic SFish stuff. However no one seems to complain about that...because theres no need...the movie accomplishs its goal and engages you on an intellectual level. Both movies are worth owning. I already own Moon and, when the "real" Avatar set comes out I'll own that as well.Just my opinion.

This is going to be extremely controversial for a lot of people here, but here goes: Avatar > Moon. Yeah, I said it. Sure, Avatar's storyline is basic, fairly predictable and has been done before. But at least it was FUN. Moon was well acted, but it didn't engage my interest at all. It was just meh and fairly boring, and I usually like films of that ilk. Most disappointing. :/

Here here SamTyler. I actually got so bored I went out and bought a new mp3 player halfway through the film and there was still 4 hours left when I got back! Well, it felt like it. Turgid is right.

I saw both Avatar and Moon in the theatres last year. Both are very different science fiction films. But, general audiences will never pick a film like Moon over a film like Avatar. However, we can at least be thankful that Avatar blew out of the water the extremely annoying roostr strutting of Michael Bay on how "Transformers-Revenge of the Fallen" was the biggest film of 2009. I was finally thankful for Avatar to blow that film out of the collective consciousness, because, seriously....the massive success of "TROTF" had me worried for a minute there about the future of all cinema, not just sci-fi cinema. Thankfully, while Avatar is not "better than Star Wars", it was, in my opinion, a great film. Moon was also a great film, however, in a more quiet and subtle way. I was glad that I made it a point to see Moon in the theatres back in July, and I still have the ticket stubs saved in true nerdity. Nonetheless, to me, it's Moon = Avatar. Great sci fi films...after "transformers", I am glad sci fi films can still be great

I found Avatar very dissapointing. It sends me to sleep. Sigouney really let herself down on this one & she looks like an extra from Toy Story is that blue rubbish. Why is it blue even before they get on that palnet?? whats with teh stupid blue thing?
