The actor Peter Graves has died, it's been announced, at the age of 83.
Graves' diverse career resulted in him meaning different things to different generations. His first major key role was as Jim Phelps in the Mission: Impossible TV series (including a return in the 80s television remake), while he also appeared in the likes of Fantasy Island, Stalag 17 and well over 100 other productions.
The performance that stands tall and clear for this writer, though, is his superb, against-type turn as Captain Oveur in Airplane!. His conversation with Joey in the cockpit still brings tears to the eyes, and thus it seemed right that that's the clip we chose to celebrate the life of a diverse, much-loved actor. It's a simple line he says, but one that will live with us forever.
Peter Graves died of natural causes. Rest in peace, sir.
